    Skipping rod

    Hey guys,

looking for advice for skipping rod. I’m looking at alx Skipper, kistler klx 6”9 LMH, and falcon head turner. I’m new to skipping. Im short 5’6 and want a shorter rod because the size of my boat fishing double. Right now all of my rods are dobyns serrias. My reels are steez sv, and steez 70sv. Should I stay with sv’s like a tatula 100 or 70 for shallow spool or try lews skipping reel. Also up for suggestions? TIA

    Mike

The kistler klx 69lmh is a pretty moderate rod. What are you skipping?

Its a decent spinnerbait and chatterbait rod, but I wouldnt want to throw jigs on it. The helium 69lmh is a much faster rod and better for bottom contact.

I would be throwing jig 1/2 oz down, senkos, paddle tails w/weighted hook. Pretty much nothing over 5/8 oz

I built my own, but, if I were going factory, I would try that ALX rod. I am your height, but use a 7’2” rod for skipping. I think that the longer rod actually makes it easier, with less power needed for a good skip. I use a Tat SV Limited Edition reel. SV reels are great for skipping.

My best skipping rod ever was a little 6’ rod that I took my kids zebco 33 off of and put a baitcaster on. Probably just because I had it so dialed in lol. I recently swapped it out because I knew I would snap it at anytime. I’d say the shorter the better for accuracy or maybe that’s just me.

I'd go with the ALX for the rod and stick with your Daiwa SV reels as they are great for skipping in my opinion.

I have two of the Fitzgerald Bryan Thrift skipping rods. 6"10". A very nice rod for that application.

Take a look at the Abu Garcia Revo SX SS reels. Excellent review on Tackle Tour.

Both of my rods are Dobyns dock skipping rods. I've had many others but I always come back to Dobyns. Just a personal preference. All my reels are Metaniums so I just use one with a 7:4 ratio to get the out under the dock(s). Good luck!

    This rod is great!!
I did team both of my rods with 8-1 Tatula reels.

It ain't the rod. It's your thumb.

I skip with all my rods from 6'-0 to 7'-10.

    Years of excessive practice.

I will admit some are easier to skip with than others, but with practice, you can skip with any rod.

It's a much overrated technique in my opinion. It has its place, but since I don't fish a lot of dock lakes, seldom skip.

Falcon Head turner is my go-to rod for skipping. I'm 5-7. I can skip with others, but this is one I'm most comfortable with. Has good tip and good backbone for hooksets. Mine are old Caras, not the new ones. Not sure if there is a difference.
