Tilt/Trim Motor Stalling - 250 Optimax Pro XS

    Serial #: 1B881718
    2012 250 Optimax Pro XS

    Hello All,

    - When trimming the engine down, it sounds like the tilt or trim motor is stalling, but only for approximately the final 10 degrees. Additionally, the the trim continues to operate until all the way down, but it is noticeably slower than normal operation.
    - In the trim up direction after the sequence above, the trim operates slower than normal for ~ 0.5 seconds then resumes normal operation.
    - My trim gauge is no longer operating correctly at these near bottom trim levels.
    - If the engine is throttled to above ~850 RPM in forward gear with the boat in the water, the trim system and trim gauge seem to operate normally.

The incorrect trim gauge operation makes me hope is that I simply need to replace the tilt bushing, but all advice is appreciated.

Have you visibly inspected the upper trim crosspin and bushings, on each side of the swivel bracket?

There was some buildup along with a few strands of fibrous material behind the trim sender on the left side. Otherwise, my untrained eye says everything is still intact.

Probably a weak trim motor that's getting ready to bite the dust....

    Thanks, Don.

    Tis a bummer to hear.

Will do some research and have a chat with my local tech.

A low amp probe connected to an oscilloscope around one of the wires of the pump motor would give a picture of the motor speed and armature connection. A deviation in the waves is an imminent failure.

This picture of yours show a destroyed tilt pin bushing on the starboard side.

Same story in my first picture? The small, linear debris at the 5:00 position did not seem attached to the bushing and easily brushed away.

I think that's just "poorly driven". It will work (as in it's better that it's there than missing completely).

The bushing is a split bushing, whomever installed it just didn't get it quite square (or round as the case may be here).
