    Update:

Sherm found that my lower unit was shot, he said all the gears had damage and I had a lot of metal in the oil, which is crazy because I completed my 1 year service in February and all of my fluids look great and my boat is stored in a temp controlled barn so this failure had to just happen. He gave mercury my engine logs and checked runout on the prop shaft along with some other checks a couple of days ago and said we had to wait to see what they said because I am on the Platinum service plan. Sherm called me this morning and Mercury is send me a brand new lower unit! I had a lot of anxiety that Mercury would try to say I hit something or find some other reason to deny this warranty claim but they honored it and took care of the problem.

They're actually pretty good about taking care of ones that fail due to a defect. It's the ones with case damage, bent propshaft, twisted splines, chipped or broken single or adjacent teeth, etc. that become difficult.

I still wear black shirts every weekday for this reason.

I know I am pretty happy with the outcome and the extended service plan definitely payed for itself!

I've seen lower units cause a noise like this as well, before they came apart.
