I love the George brand of shorts from Walmart. Super cheap and not heavy material and some stretch and they are khaki style so you can wear them out places and still be respectable looking. I am a teacher and we don't get much grief about wearing shorts in nicer weather as long as they aren't like cargo shorts or camo. I think I own every color and $10 per pair.
Would free-ballin' boxers be an option?
