    2002 250xb lower unit

don, serial # OT429946 lower unit busted from freeze. had water in it, bad seal i suppose. i had no way of knowing. it had been running fine. any way i doubt ins. will cover. so i may have to try to replace out of pocket... i think it is 1:75 with 20" shaft. but not sure. i don't know if it is a 8 or 13 spline. just need you to give me an ideal of what i need to be looking for and approx. cost... as usual Thanks in advance...

    Dallas:

That's tough to say without "seeing and inspecting" what you've got.

Could be as simple as a "replacement case" with new seals, or as bad as a complete gearcase assembly....

If you want to give me a call this morning, we do build these on a "ship-n-return" basis here... and I'll be glad to give you a "range" that we could expect, best and worst case.

don, i am sure it will be a total replacement. it froze and cracked the outter case. if ins. will cover it, no big deal. but if i have to take care of it out of pocket. i need to know what to look for as far as gear ratio. shaft length , and spline. i think i can find one but i don't want to buy the wrong lower unit... insurance may cover it but i have my doubts because it had water in the gear case probably due to bad seal. Ins. will say it was nowmal wear or negilance on my part even though i had no way of knowing or no suspicions. so i need to know how to identify the lower unit i need.. i know it is the heavy duty racing verson. so what part # will it be.. i live in Louisiana near toledo bend and i hope to be able to locate one locally...i plan to carry it to Cheek's marine in pineville tomarrow. i am going to be out at the least a teardown/estamate... if ins. dosent cover it..

Your engine should have come with Part# 1689-840470T10 (1.75 ratio). There are several other gearcases that are suitable (various 1.75 ratio models, including the Torquemaster).

    You've also got an IM.

Don, Doesn't all XB motors come with a torquemaster. That is all that is shown for that seriel number. To the guy that has the blown case, don't bet on your insurance covering that . They usually cover impact damage not freezing. Get a housing and let Don put your internals in it and from now on change the gearlube before the first freeze EVERY year and find the water before it finds it's way through your gearcase.

That would be correct.... although there are multiple "versions" of the Torquemaster case (and some of these engines may have been converted to some other gearcase as well... it's quite common).
