I need some help with my lower unit. I removed the lower unit in neutral, replaced the water pump and reinstalled the lower unit in neutral. Went to the lake, cranked the motor and put it in reverse and it did nothing. Put it in forward and it did nothing. I removed the lower unit, turned the switch on and put it in the reverse. The actuator moved to the reverse position. I set the lower unit to reverse and reinstalled the lower unit. I moved the shifter back to neutral but the prop will not spin and motor will not crank. Removed the lower unit and set it back to neutral. I turned the switch back on and the shift actuator went back to neutral. I reinstalled the lower unit in neutral and cranked the motor and it still doesn’t turn in either direction.

Is the end of the shift shaft on lower unit damaged in any way like it’s not making full contact with the actuator ?

Ok I dont think it’s possible to miss the actuator and have it bolt up flush. I had a bit of trouble getting mine lined up after changing water pump. I referred to the service manual and it said to take a wrench and manually rotate actuator so many degrees and I got it line up that way. As soon as you turn the key to on it would automatically go back to neutral regardless of how it was turned. If the end of shift shaft isn’t damaged take a good look at the actuator and make sure the socket shaft goes into is in good shape.
