    1996 150 Fast Strike Won't Run over 4500ish RPM

I have researched this site and I am still stuck. I do have a manual and I am waiting on a Johnnyrude easy timer to arrive.

This boat sat in a shop for 7 years until I got it. The boat is a 1996 ranger 354. When I got it I restored it. I removed the fuel tanks, cleaned them, and ran all new lines to the motor. I took the carbs off and rebuilt them. I did not spray cleaner through the orifice of the high side jets so I may have just answered my problem. I did not realize they were in the bowls until I researched this forum and read where I needed to check them for being loose. I made sure they were all seated. I don't have any leaks. I have also replaced the coils, ignition box, and all plugs. it runs great and strong. Compression is 125 on the top 4 cylinders, 115 on the bottom two. Any advice? She just doesn't run Wide open and scream like it should. I have hit 5k rpms but that was trimmed out, jacked up and a rooster tail.

Check engine led come on? Remove the high speed orifices and clean them and seat them fully in the float bowl. High speed circuit kicks in ~4K.

I will do that. I did the press in the key trick and it made it worse.

I made sure everything is synced together. The arm that advances the timing way out. I adjusted it to where it’s touching the timing advance arm. I’ll run it this weekend and report back.

Decided to check the stator since it’s a simple check. The Manual says resistance should be .12 +- .07. I got .100. Next step says check it to ground. I did and I’m getting .028 and .084. Which by the manual it’s saying the stator is grounding itself. Is this something common. And could this be an issue?

Did you ever get this figured out? I’m having the exact same symptoms, I’ve been troubleshooting for over a year and nothing seems to change it. I also PM’d you, thanks.

Have you replaced your fuel tank selector valve? I had a similar issue on my 95 Intruder and it turned out the valve was letting in air to the system. Some very smart and helpful folks on here helped me figure it out.
    Good luck!

I redid my math and the stator is fine. I ran it this weekend still the same issue. I do have a couple questions for the omc gurus.

    1. If my carb bowls are warped, will they leak out fuel or just suck in air?

    2. When I press in my key at current max rpm the motor will stumble but it won’t die. I did find a fuel leak when I prime it. It’s leaking at the hose on the intake side of the fuel pump. I tried to tighten up around the hose. I’m going to get a new hose and clamp today.

Once I know my motor side is good I’ll look there! When I restored this Ranger I was going to replace it but I couldn’t get it out! Mine is in the back by the motor.

Have you pulled your spark plugs and looked for any difference between them? May give you a clue to which cylinder is not contributing. I would think any continuity to ground on the stator wires will cause issues. Warped bowls can cause issues with the high speed fuel delivery.

I will pull my plugs this week and post pictures.
