I had this happen as well on one of my two Apex units. You need to make sure your SD card is no larger than 32GB, and make sure it's formatted correctly before downloading the software update to it. If you did that, and it still failed, that is the exact same issue that I had. I have no idea why it failed because it worked fine on one of my two units but not the other. I finally was able to get it to update by removing and reinstalling the SD card several times. It failed three or four times but finally took. I was concerned that I was going to brick my unit but when it finally worked all was well. I now have the latest update to install but I'm really concerned about trying it. Like I said, I have no idea what the issue was on the one unit.

For some reason, some of the Apex units seem to have very picky Micro SC Card readers. On my Apex 19, I have issues with using my VX card in slot 2. You might try the other SD card slot. Also try inserting the card slowly using your fingernail, being sure that it goes all the way in and then remove your finger slowly. That seems to help on mine.

I just had a problem upgrading my Apex the other day. I tried everything that I could think of and no luck. I called humminbird support and they were great. The first thing They told me to do was do a format on the card I was using. Then I was told to put the card in the Apex and let it encrypt the card. Next I was told to delete any of the new upgrade files that I had on the computor. This was only the new upgrade file that I had loaded while trying to install. I was told to then download the new upgrade file so there was only one of this file on the computor. next I was told to copy the downloaded files to the recent encrypted card. The final step was to insert the card into the Apex and wait for it to recognize the card or go to the upgrade screen and install the new upgrade. Everything went great and I was told that for some reason humminbird units do not like duplicate files on the computor when upgrading. Hope this helps and if not use humminbird support if you need to.

The duplicate downloads have a copy number in the file name like (1), (2), etc. That is why the unit will not recognize the update file.

What you describe is good advice when the unit doesn't recognize the update. In the OP's case, his unit is recognizing the update but failing during the update process. That's a totally different issue.

Well. I tried it again the next day and it got a little further in the process. Then I tried it again and it loaded just fine. I'm stumped.

Just a little bit of advice on this mater Never had a problem updating my units but finally my luck came to an end trying to update my solix units and explore , yes I got one of the explore units that when you put the power to them , Explore would come on , But back to the updates I couldn't get the updates to work . Brand new sd cards 32 fat SCAN DISK Formatted like always then loaded it to card nope didn't work , delete from cards and formatted again and loaded on the cards still nothing , So couldn't figure but one thing bad cards , so head out to local store and buy 2 new cards of different brand , formatted them, loaded on new cards and poped them in and wow went right to work updating , can drive you nuts over a bad cards , o by the way the update fixed my explore
