Transom Mounting Bolt Sheared off 4 stroke pro XS 250

Don’t have serial as it’s my brothers motor, and he’s couple hundred miles south of me currently.

    2022 250 Pro XS 4s,

as title states, one of the mounting bolts that holds the jackplate to the transom sheared off when on the trailer. Other ones are all in tact currently.

is this as simple as replacing the busted mounting bolt as well as the rest of them since I’m assuming those have gone under more stress since the one sheared off, then torque to spec?
If we don't have issues with it, what will we have?-JM

I would change them all just for peace of mind. The other ones could be from the same lot as the one that failed and do the same.Silicone them good and torque to 55 ft/lbs.

Sounds good, thanks guys. Definitely been thinking about getting a leash even prior to this happening. Is there a bolt kit from mercury we should order?

Leash wouldn't be any good for this

Some boat makers use six bolts instead of four. Allison has done it for many years

I would check to see grade of broken bolt. Could be someone used a standard bolt. I believe engine mounting bolts are normally grade 5 and some may use grade 8. If I remember correctly they used grade 5 bolts with fine threads when mounting my engine. The fine threads I guess has more holding power!

Never heard of a bolt breaking like that before unless it’s the wrong grade or damaged. Possible that someone had taken them off and reinstalled. Stainless will gall up and get hot and weaken and can make it snap into. I would replace all 4, make sure they are the correct grade stainless. You may need to pull the motor to get a good seal so you don’t have a leak between JP and transom.

Would be totally useless in this case, my friend.

I would not be surprised to find incorrect hardware was used (it should be 1/2" SS, Fine Thread bolts with BRASS Nylock nuts and proper load-distributing washers).

I would ALSO be very concerned about the ENGINE mounting bolts, steering, trim system, transom assembly, etc. Very careful inspection and in the case of hardware such as the engine mounting hardware, suggest the "if in doubt throw it out" approach.

Thanks everyone, I will get the required bolts and nuts and for sure replace all the ones from jackplate to transom along with anything else that seems suspect after we take a look at it and go through it all.
