changing winch strap on a 2021 basscar cougar

I need to change the winch strap on my trailer. It has the built in steps on the trailer. My question is, do i have to take the winch completely off the trailer to replace the strap? The trailer steps are in the way of the bolts that are on the winch. There are 4 bolts on the bottom of the winch itself that hold it to the trailer, do these have to be removed to take the winch completely off and then change the strap or is there an easier way?

Guys, i understand how to actually change the strap but my winch is sandwiched in between the steps on the trailer so that i cannot get to the bolts on one side. I guess my qustion should be, do i have to undo the 4 bolts that is holding the winch to the trailer.

you should be able to fully unwind the old strap and swap it out with a new one. winch should not have to be moved at all

Here is a picture of my winch. U can see that one side is completely covered by the steps. Do i have to take the winch completely off to change the strap? There is no way to get to the bolts on this side.winch pic.png

Just pull it off from the front towards the boat?

I know how to how to pull the strap all the way out but don't you have to take the bolts out to be able to remove the old one and install the new one?

Take 60 seconds, go unwind the strap and look at it.

Hey buddy I checked it out cause I needed to do something to mine. Yes on the Fulton's you have to unbolt it from the trailer. Easy to do with a couple 1/2in wrenches.

U guys were alot of help. I did unwind it completely before i came on here and ask about it. I also watched the video. I still wasn't sure if the side covers to the winch had to come off in order to get to the bolt that holds the strap to the winch drum. On my trailer, the steps have one side covered.

    Sorry i ask.

Looks like if you unroll the strap, then take out the bolt holding the winch strap wheel and handle you might get to the bolts. Is the winch just enclosed around it or blocked by the step ? Thanks. BC

The winch is surrounded by the steps on 3 side, top, bottom and left.

I ended up unbolting mine as mentioned above with 2 wrenches. But if I were to do it again I would just cut the strap off with a razor and put the new strap on with a wedge in the loop as shown in the video above. You could use a 2 in long 1/4 bolt and chop the head off or whatever piece of metal bar you can find around for a wedge. Either way is pretty quick.

I replaced my 2019 cougar winch strap this winter. I removed the winch and took it all apart. I cleaned and greased all the parts and put it back to gather. I did have an issue with the bold the goes through the end of the strap that secures it. The bolt was bent so I had to grind it off and replace. The winch works great now and locks perfectly. I didn't need to replace the winch which I though I would have to do.
