Or is the only access the ramp at the state park? I've never been in there, but now that Caernarvon is gone I guess I'll have to learn the area.

There is a free launch on Louisiana Ave. you just go to the red light by the shrimp lot turn by the light and go past the lot all the way to the back and there's the launch. Its no more than a few hundred yards off the expressway.

Thanks! Hopefully it's a safe place to park without having to worry about the truck.
Matt... just pay the couple of bucks at the park... it is a really nice launch, and there is ALWAYS plenty of parking.
No kidding. I stopped by the free launch at lunch today to check it out and it appears to be less than desireable. No parking and very questionable as to whether or not the place would be safe to leave a vehicle.
My problem is that with Caernarvon being devastated this will be my main bass fishing area. During the summers I fish about 6 days a week and it looks like that will be pretty costly. Oh well, I guess that's just another price I will have to pay to be a bass fisherman around here.
Thanks for the info!
where are you living now? might be worth the trip to fish Des Allemands.
Right in the middle of the city. Corner of Poydras and Tchoupitoulas. I've fished Des Allemands a good bit, but it's not possible in the time I have after work. Im working on the West bank right now and its only a few minutes to Segnette. I'll be there all weekend if the weather permits.
The launch is ok in the day time but I wouldn't leave it over night. I live only a couple of blocks from there and the cops do go back there quite often. Me and friends have been using it for years and I use it when using my mud boat but go to the park with the bass boat. You should be able to get a yearly pass for $30.

That's what I need. I didn't realize it was only a dollar to launch or I probably wouldn't have asked in the first place, but the yearly pass will definitely save me some money. How do you get in before daylight? I asked the girl at the booth the other day and she said they don't open the gates until 7AM. That puts alot of fishermen out of some good fishing time.
you gotta go in throught the back off of Lapalco Blvd
Thanks again barchief. I was wondering how they were running the tournaments out of there with them not opening until 7am. There were two club tournaments on Sunday while I was out there. I spoke with a couple boats and nobody had much to speak of. I wound up with two bass that were both around a pound and a half. I really had to work my butt off for those two. One came off a 1/4 ounce white rumba doll spinnerbait and the other came off one of my specially colored baby brush hogs. That system that came through really botched things up out there.
well, the other thing is that the diversion is really pushing some water through there. Water is like Chocolate milk. looks like is used to right outside the Big Mar.
I managed to find some decent water clarity in some of the dead end canals that the bass boats couldn't get into. That's where I caught my two fish, but there just wasn't much fish activity. Once that water gets low and the mud along the bank is showing it only takes one boat to run through on plane to muddy things up. That's where my Gator Trax comes in handy. I just find the canals that are shallow in the front and then get deeper towards the back and commence to fishing. It takes a little longer to get around, but it sure comes in handy after the NW wind blows all the water out of the marsh.
Raised a few eyebrows while I was out the other day as well. Apparently some of the tournament guys have never seen a mud boat run "dry" ground before.

those pics are out of Segnette or back in Caernarvon?
The top one is Segnette and the bottom one is Caernarvon.
those pics of Caernarvon make me wanna cry.
You ain't seen nothin yet. Wait till you see it for yourself!! There are places out there that were unbelievable fishing spots that will never even be accessible by boats again. Not to mention all the boats, bathtubs, and other debris out in the middle of nowhere in the marsh.
It's a $1 if you are by yourself but $2 up to 4 people. I just can't wait till April for our Wednesday afternoon tournaments to start. I think I seen you out there Sunday we were hunting rabbits out of a flat with 150 Yam with riging and a mud boat. Were you by Couba Island & Bay Bardeaux?

That was me. I threw up my hand and waved at yall as I went by. That was only my second trip to the area. Are there any good numbers of rabbits out there still? Wasn't sure how the water treated the bunnies during the storm. Also, were yall running dogs or just walking them up?
We killed 25 working a small little area with dogs. We didn't leave the house till after sun up and you can only hunt till noon on the reserve. The water doesn't seam to have been to bad but some areas they are scarce and some are thick. You just move till you find them.
