    When I was on the school board this type of situation drove me nuts. The official policy was zero tolerance for fighting and since it takes two to tango....
    I got out-voted every time.

    That would be me if I was a dad and I know my mom would have been that way with me because she taught me to not take shit off anyone but also to NEVER start a fight but to defend myself when necessary. No bully wanted to fight me because they were too scared to throw the first punch because I was a little crazy back in school. Bullies are generally cowards with a terrible life at home. Sad really.

    I always believed that the instigator should get the worst punishment but I gave both some type of punishment because they could have let me settle it. If I knew something was going on I would take care of it. If they come to me I would put an end to it through one route or other. But as a teacher I was responsible if either got hurt. True story- I was called when teaching a class. Principal from middle school were my middle son was. To make it short a boy spit in his drink and then my son threw it on the boy and climbed over the lunchroom table on top of him. Principal asked did I want to handle it or him. Answer: do what you think is needed. He responded with “that’s what I thought you would say”. Both received a paddling. He later told me he made sure the perpetrator got the worst of it.
