While we are a long ways away, we have a lot of lakes in MN that are quite similar to Florida. Natural lakes with a lot of grass. I fish a buzz bait on braid all the time. Cuts weeds better for a higher landing percentage. For bladed jig, I start the season with 15 - 17lb flouro line on a MH rod. Once the grass gets thicker (June for us) I switch to 40# braid but a slightly softer composite rod. I think you might see a higher landing percentage with braid in Florida as it cuts the weeds so much better. Tight lines!Originally Posted by borderbasser

I’m having difficulty with that also. I use 50# on 99% of all my baitcasters and I don’t break off, unless I sink into a log/tree from the bank.

When I started breaking 50 lb test swinging fish about 25 years ago. Switched to 65. No issues since.
Big Game 15 on chatterbaits and been trying 40/50lb braid on buzzbaits. Use a lighter rod with the braid but, not sold on it 100% yet. After using mono all my life, it's hard to not feel too much with no stretch...lol. Still use BG mono for most applications, it just works for me? Have switched over to braid for frogs..easy to give the fish time to get it with a frog. Also been using it on top waters some.
That being said I'm in love with braid for spinning reels. Has completely changed how much I use them. Have much more confidence with braid and can cast much farther and line twist at spool almost disappears. Don't use a leader very much though. Mostly straight braid.
Have not got on the flouro bandwagon?? If I fished super clear water more I may try it. Like I said earlier, been using mono for 55 years. Just works for most of my fishing applications.
Am I the only one we does not like braid for buzzbaits? I feel the hookup ratio and missed/lost fist is way worse on braid especially on a light bite. Also the hooksets seem reactionary on my part so I feel like mono gives the fish a split second longer to get hooked good. I even try not to look at the bait on the retrieve but nearly impossible for me.
If professionals who's careers depend on catching fish use FFS then that's what I'm using. Might be too simple of a philosophy but makes sense to me.
I'm pretty much with you. Been trying braid but, feel the hook up ratio goes down and I switch back to mono. Still trying to find the right rod/braid combo for buzzbaits. Been using medium 7 foot with soft tip. The one big benifit of braid is casting distance, at least for me. I usually have two buzzbait set ups. One with mono and one with braid. Conditions, cover and wind determine when and where I throw them.
Try a MH with fast tip. In my own thinking and from my own experience a buzzbait bite is almost always a reaction bite. I can't see how braid is gonna hurt that or"pull" the bait away from the fish. Most of the time you are not feeling the bite before it's truly on any way. That millisecond is not gonna make you miss fish in my opinion.
Sincea buzzbait is a single hook baitI want to make sure the rod and line drive that hook home.
I use braid on every bass setup I own and use floro leader on all but when I’m using frogs/toads. Just what I have confidence in.. floro is tempting but hard to switch when braid can last years

Exactly but the hookset is also a reaction, reaction to the sight and sound unlike other baits more by feel. Might just be in my head but I'll never use braid for a buzzbait and I have a very good catch ratio with them (knock on wood) - it's my favorite bait!

I rarely miss them with braid with Buzzbaits. Do miss a few on a frog
I do 50# braid on both. Tried fluoro on the chatterbait and my amount of missed fish increased significantly.

Same, I throw a buzzbait more than anything else, every year. I use mono for buzzbaits with a MH XFast rod. I want the tip to be soft, but when I set the hook, I want the rod to help keep them hooked and keep them coming towards the boat. The little bit of stretch in the mono seems to help absorb some of the line tension when fighting the fish is all. I don't believe it has anything to do with pulling the bait away from the fish, that's all in the hookset timing. I've tried M rods, H rods, MH Mod and F rods, etc. Also tried braid and copoly and keep coming back to the same setup. However, this is fishing mostly the Ohio River and lakes in KY. If I go to a grass lake, I'm more likely throwing braid and adjusting my hook set accordingly.

I would love to be able to use braid with those baits. I have tested it multiple times and just can't, the way I do things results in misses and skin hooked fish. I can't throw a swimjig with braid either, and I put quite a bit of time into that and just can't. It would make things so much easier. I also noticed that I bend hooks out using braid on swimjigs and bladed jigs. I don't use stiff rods either.
Spinnerbaits and frogs and Buzzbaits all on braid.
I am what is referred to as a Big American and i've never once snapped 50# and I don't exactly get cute with them on the hooksets

I just want to know what kind of rod is breaking this 50lb braid consistently.
I broke 50# power pro several times on a carolina rig although I think it might have been getting weakened dragging on rocks. Went to 65 and no more trouble.
To answer your original question, I used to throw chatterbaits on braid and was pretty successful doing so aside from I was breaking blades and snaps. This was back in the old days when it was hard to find a good quality bladed jig. Caught lots of fish doing that including a 10lber. I've since switched to fluro and don't see myself going back to braid. I just hate listening to it go through the guides.
