If I purchase a new Mercury 250 pro xs and receive the 7 year extended gold warranty, can I upgrade to platinum warranty later? And will it be cheaper since its an upgrade?

I'm in the same situation. Boat hasn't been built yet. Ballpark cost? Does the price increase every day, month or what?
The sooner you upgrade to Platinum the less it will cost. Contact Don at European Marine for BBC pricing.

In a nutshell, a warranty is an agreement by a manufacturer to do certain things, based on certain terms and conditions, for a period of time once the product goes into service. No charge to the purchaser. Automatically comes with the motor.
A service contract is something that provides additional warranty like coverage but it is not the same. It is for sale. Optional. Can be purchased or not. Has terms and conditions and a time span that will generally be different from the warranty.
All three documents (warranty, gold contract, platinum contract) can be found online.
The cardinal rule is read the warranty/contract, read the warranty/contract, read the warranty contract. Don't be surprised, confused and possibly angry later on. Folks for the most part seem to have an irrational expectation that anything and everything going wrong will be fixed by the motor maker.

Don, what’s the difference? It cost $799 to go from four years of gold to four years of platinum. You get three years of factory that is basically the same as platinum. At the end of the day it’s a full seven years of warranty! Get off your high horse, you make being a member of this website hard to do man! I swear the highlight of your day must be knit picking this forum! I knew when I posted that, that I’d get a response from you that my wording was incorrect!
Words matter. Moreso in warranties and contracts than it does in our general day to day discussions.
It is not a full seven years of warranty. Never has been. Despite the unknowing calling a contract a warranty. Makes about as much sense as calling a four stroke a two stroke. Or calling an alternator a stator system. Or a wire a string.
To the 99% that will never need to use the warranty of the contracts, this is all a moot point. To the less than 1% that will need to use the warranty and/or the contract, it might matter. Might matter big time.
Since when has someone knowledgeable wanting to help educate folks become a bad thing? Is that testosterone talking?

Crazy to me how folks want to debate that which they have nil knowledge of.
