May not look the best but foam water pipe insulation?
You put something that heavy in contact with a surface that moves and shakes that much, especially the plastic chaps, and its going to rub and look bad. You just gotta decide if the safety outweighs the damage.

Maybe a cable sock around it would help.
I’ve got one I put it on last summer. I haven’t noticed any scuffing so far, but maybe you could double or triple up the clear protector or find something a bit thicker.
Paint Protection Film (clear bra). Would be a couple hundred bucks to have a shop apply the film but will invisibly do the job. My engine and top cap are fully wrapped and it has saved my rig from several scratches and gouges.

I put a couple of pieces of clear packing tape on the leash itself and on the chaps where it was rubbing. I'm sure the 3M product would be superior

WHAT safety does a leash give you? What advantage does it have? We run around in 2' of water in 90 mph+ flats fishing boats and nobody uses them. If you hit something, you want the lower unit to kick up (and if it kicks up high enough the prop will lose bite so it's not trying to propel itself forward anymore), instead of a leash trying to rip the transom off. If you knock the motor off (which I've never seen)the last thing you want is it still trying to propel the boat and into the boat while it's not attached to the boat.
Maybe you’ve never seen an engine come in the boat after hitting something…

2. INSTALLER MUST ALSO REFER TO MERCURY SERVICE BULLETIN 2013-15R1. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING is to be placed on the Engine Mounting Fasteners other than the engine. No exception for that.
There have been cases where engines were physically broken by significant impact forces, permitting the engine to either fall off the back, or in the case of a high-RPM condition the engine could potentially come over the back of the boat. This later situation, though rare, is what the "Leash" is marketed to address.
Here's the catch: In a large majority of cases, the "breakage" that has occurred happens at the engine mounting holes, and in many cases is caused by or contributed to by LOOSE engine hardware, or engine hardware that does not provide proper clamp load of the transom bracket against the engine mounting surface.
Attaching any device TO engine mounting hardware would be in direct violation of the recommendations in the Engine Mounting Instructions, Service Bulletin 2013-15R1, and could (potentially) contribute to or cause the very condition or occurrence that the device claims to address.
So there are two sides to the coin. COULD it help: Absolutely. The question is whether or not it's installation conflicts with the engine manufacturer's recommendations.

I’m all with you on trying to keep things looking nice! I’ve used automotive vinyl wrap on the gunnels of my Aluminum boat to hide and keep from getting more scratches and it’s done fine. This stuff comes in clear and high gloss black. Nice thing about this is it’s easy to put on and take off. If it were to get scratched up over time you can replace it and your back to looking good!

No, and I'm willing to bet neither have you! It's such a rare occurrence that it almost never happens. I saw the one video of the motor driving itself through the bass boat, which was from a broken jackplate and a leash wouldn't have helped because motor was attached to jackplate. Usually if a motor hits something like a big log, it's getting ripped off of the transom and a leash is just going to get snapped off of the transom too.
It has happened on one of our local lakes. It became a big talking point around here after Cody’s accident. The pictures of his boat was all over the internet(Old Hickory Lake accident). I had purchased a Leash recently while I found a good deal on one,but after talking to Don about the mounting, I decided against it. I honestly believe every installation I’ve seen is mounted incorrectly, and prefer not to get into that scenario with Mercury and The Leash, if anything were to ever even happen.

I love people like you that will “bet” butttttt they no nothing about what someone else’s experiences are. Some people….HA HA HA HA. Well….a few years ago in a Collins Inc/Bass for Cash Tournament it happened to Tony Woodard in a 20’ newer Ranger, passenger Stewart Adams. It happened a mile or 2 out of the mouth of the Roanoke River on the Albemarle Sound, Plymouth NC. Motor flipped up after hitting a big log “floating level with the surface” and wound up in the boat. It was a big deal here at the time….

It happens enough to warrant utilizing one. I have seen a half dozen different stories about it occurring so it does happen. Also even if the jackplate and transom are ripped off the leash should give enough resistance to decelerate the items more than if it wasn't installed and that could make the difference in a close call and a bad outcome.
