VesselView Mobile has been REPLACED by Smartcraft Connect MOBILE

Well folks... have told a number over the last couple of years that the old "Gateway" and the "VesselView Mobile" were being phased out and replaced.

As of last week, Mercury is superseding the VesselView Mobile part numbers to an Engine-Mounted "Smartcraft Connect Mobile".

Benefit for you... more features and capability (Wifi, Bluetooth, App Features, (AND with the optional Smartcraft Connect version, NMEA-2000 capabilities).

Yes- it's the "Smartcraft Connect- Engine Mounted" module.

Though visually similar, the "Smartcraft Connect MOBILE" doesn't have programming for NMEA-2K, according to documentation as of 10/11/24.

No. 8M0165589 is an outdated "Gateway Stick".

    Don:

Is this the correct part number for the new SmartCraft Connect? 98-8M0173128

Information on this unit has been hard to find, and what I did find, doesn’t show that it will work on a 2020 Mercury PROXS 250 V8. Do you know if that’s correct or not?

Also, I found conflicting information as to whether or not this part number has NEMA 2000 capabilities. I’m wanting to view info and/or gauges on a Humminbird Solix unit

8M0173128 is the Smartcraft Connect MOBILE (and it does NOT have NMEA-2000/VesselView programming/capability).

Your engine would be compatible with ANY Smartcraft Instrument, Display, VesselView Link, or Smartcraft Connect.

Some of the confusion on the Smartcraft Connect MOBILE stems from a NMEA-2000 cable that dangles out of the device. The device, according to Mercury's product release bulletin, does NOT have NMEA-2000 capability, due to it's programming.

Has there been an MSRP listed for the product yet? I’ve searched for a bit and can’t find the new one listed for sale anywhere yet. Meecury’s website is extremely vague on the description they have. Not even sure it’s the newest version.

Don, will the current VesselView Mobile app remain functional or will this new part number drive all users to the new hardware part number for use with a new app replacing the current VVM app?

Mercury has committed to maintaining APP-accessible functionality for consumers that are using the VesselView MOBILE product.

For those that are looking to add SmartCraft to their boats I wanted to clear up some confusion around naming and model numbers. It appears as though there are two product names here; SmartCraft Connect and SmartCraft Connect Mobile.

While both have an NMEA pigtail, only the 'non-mobile' version supports NMEA. (This is covered on a number of posts here)

However, what I wasn't able to easily find are the mappings of part numbers to names. Since I bought them both and have gone through it, I hope you learn from my delays.

    SmartCraft Connect PN: 8M0173704
SmartCraft Connect Mobile PN: 8M0173128 (No NMEA support)

SmartCraft Connect PN: 8M0173704 <*** UNDER COWLING ONLY ***>

    +1

I've added a note above that 8M0173704 is for installation UNDER THE COWLING.

Also note: There are multiple other versions, and Part Numbers are often superseded. It is ALWAYS best to purchase through a knowledgeable dealer that is keenly familiar with the latest/greatest info, such as one of our BBC Sponsors.

Don, I hesitate to correct you here, but I think I must to save others the time and hassle I ran into with this new product line and naming convention.

8M0173704 is rated for under cowl installs. Its 8M0173694 that is the new SmartConnect for HELM installs. (I presume under helm has NMEA as its not called out as "Wireless only")

I bought 8M0173704 and the packaging and instructions within documented the install process complete with warnings about where the wires are run, under the cowling, and to consider the ignition wires, etc when installing. Also the Mercury EzParts application looks to confirm the same:

Is there something I'm perhaps missing, or was that a typo and you meant under cowling installs only?

Good catch- and you are absolutely correct. This is one of the difficulties with Part Numbers - and I can tell you these will supersede to another number (probably sooner than later) as well.

The "Wireless Only" was added due to confusion that was occurring with NMEA-2000 connectors that were not active.

Is the new smart craft mobile worth upgrading too over the vessel view that I currently have. I’ve tried to research online but am unclear what the differences are ?

At present they are similar, BUT the SC-Connect Mobile DOES feature Wifi and can be updated as new firmware becomes available.

IMHO, the App is a little more intuitive, and I would expect it to improve further in the months/years to come.

Does SmartCraft Connect obsolete VesselView Link?
What additional function over VesselView link does the SmartCraft Connect (NEMA-2000 Version) provide?
Or is SmartCraft Connect NEMA-2000 actually less functional, in that int only provides a bridge from SC <--> NEMA2K, and does not provide the full VesselView display that VVL does?

P.S. I have searched Mercury.com ad nauseum and there isn't really much detailed info available.

Perhaps SC Connect is a new platform and additional functionality will be released as SoftwareUpdates going forward?
