    Picked up a spare 115

    E115TSLECM
    Got for $100
Not 100 percent sure it runs, but gentleman I got it from says it ran but had a weak hole. He took it off to put a 150 on his boat.
I figured for 100 bucks I could get that much in parts off of it if it didn't run.
Only issue I see is that the TSL part of the number doesn't seem to translate on the description chart.
    I come up with 115hp T tilt/trim S Sail? L 20" EC 1998 M?
    That seem correct?

Also it is a bubble back and has the same carb cover my 1985 115 has so I know it isn't a looper. So being they are both crossflows, they should be basically interchangeable right?

I guess the S could also be "special styling" according to a different list. Maybe that is the SPL stickers?
The SL is listed as 60° v tilt and trim, but I thought the cross flow was a 90.

Yes it is a cross flow and 1985. The SPL means Special as it was manufactured without VRO. It was intended as lower cost by reducing certain features.
smaller engines of the day 88hp (90) did not have VRO and TnT.

The sticker says EC which I've assumed is 98. I was wondering if it was comparable to my 85, ( which had the vro removed in the 80s). Going to do a compression check this weekend if I get time.
After a good amount of sleep ( this week has been an off week) I think I figured out what had me stumped.
    E evinrude obviously
    115
    T tilt/trim
    S Special
    L 20"
    EC 1998
    M still not sure

    Originally I thought it was
T tilt trim and SL as a combination code that would have denoted a different engine. But that would have left out the shaft length.

Sweet. Good to know. As for say the wiring, is it pretty close to the same? The one I picked up doesn't have the big red connector like the older engine.

No the 98 has the MWS harness the 85 has the big red plug but you can get an adapter cable to make the conversion just depends on which one you need. 95 engine to 96 boat or 96 engine to 95 boat.

Would be the 98 engine to a 85 boat. Found the adapter online... seems the Evinrude one is cheaper than the aftermarket one. May get it just incase I ever need to swap engines...if this one ends up in decent condition. To test for compression on a stand, it won't hurt anything if I just power straight to the starter will it? I was just going to use jumper cables.

Well been excessively busy with life, but finally got around to checking out this engine.
Pulled all the plugs and gave a squirt of oil to lube the cylinders, and hooked the fuel line up to the boat.... It fires up and runs on the hose pretty well. It will need an impeller for sure as it only peed a weak stream of what was being forced in by the hose.

Sounds pretty healthy, I still need to do a compression check, but wanted to make sure it even started before I checked that way the rings could reseal some from sitting.

    Agreed.
Oh and it this threads first post, I stated the guy I got it from said it had a weak cylinder.... when I was pulling the plugs to oil the cylinders before starting it, one plug was almost threaded all the way out. I'm sure that could have had something to do with that.
