I would have thought a B52 bomber could carry as much as a B2

But I haven’t been in the Air Force.

Thanks for that info. That article was misleading. I think they were talking about 30 thousand pound bunker buster bombs. But the way I read it was the B2 was the only plane that could carry that much payload.

Maybe the bunker buster, being relatively new, was not designed to be compatible with the B52 ?

I would say you are right. But the person writing that article. Made it sound as if it was the weight. But it could b just me reading it that way. I honestly think some of these writers need to proof read their work.

the 52s Bomb bay isn't wide enough for the MOAB.

Is the MOAB the same bomb as the Bunker buster bomb?

The MOAB is more like what they used to call a daisy cutter, surface detonation IIRC.

The bunker busters are designed for deep penetration before detonating.

The B-1 is a beast of a machine. It's specs and capabilities are amazing. When I was working for an aircraft manufacturer in Wichita I had a buddy that was a sparky on the B-1 simulators at McConnell AFB. He invited me on base after hours and I got the privilege of flying the Bone around for eight hours in two different sessions. Being a little Cessna driver at the time it was the ultimate video game. Surprisingly I was able to successfully execute many takeoffs and landings without crashing it although I tripped the overspeed and hot brakes warnings more than a few times

There are very few things more inpressive than seing the bone take off under full power with permission for an unrestricted climb...mercy, shakes the ground and looks awesome!

In 2001 I was around every B1 in the inventory for a long deployment. They rotated in and out every 6 months. Seeing them leave out fully loaded and come back empty was very satisfying in knowing someone just took an ass whooping!

Every few hours a 2 ship flight would take off afterburners lit. But before them tankers would take off because the Bones needed fuel shortly after taking off.

Would love to see that. Is there any video of those takeoffs?

The B-52 has been used since the 50’s and it’s one plane worth every cent! I did 23 years Air Force and 18 in federal service afterwards and that is one aircraft that always impressed me every time I saw it

Used to compete against other bases, services and countries. I was stationed up in NY and nothing is as freaky as a B52 coming in with the wheels facing straight down the runway but the aircraft pointing 20 degrees off center. They would fly over us as we ran the perimeter road and you would swear it was crashing. Weird….

You know B52's don't have ailerons, only spoilers for roll control.

B52 can carry a fair amount of ordinance externally on the wings

Grew up going to family cottage in Oscoda MI a crossed the street from wurtsmith air force base and every morning you would hear them start spinning up those monster engines and when they fired up the ground would shake
