    BayStar/SeaStar Hydraulic Steering Issue

I replaced my BayStar hydraulic cylinder HC4645-3 and helm with refurbished units from a factory authorized service center after my previous cylinder inner seals failed. After bleeding and purging I am finding that I’m getting Hydraulic lock when I steer full port or full starboard.

Note that I replaced the cylinder first and had this issue only on one side. The other side would push back like there was fluid behind the piston providing resistance. I called the service center and he recommended a new helm. With the new helm I have the issue both ways now. I spoke with the service center and sent them this video and was assured that this is normal. I never experienced this previously and it seems bad that the wheel could get suck.He suggested that perhaps I’ve always had issues and just never knew it until I replaced everything.

Looking for advice on what could be happening, if this or normal, and whether I need to return the parts and try again.

You probably do not want to hear this, but the Baystar System is not rated for your rig. It is rated for up to a 150 but only in a deep V configuration. Bass and F&S run the props a lot higher in the water column and that increases steering pressures significantly.

George says disconnect the actuator cylinder from your motor and see if it still does it.

Man that sucks. The boat came with the BayStar system when I bought it in 2015. I had not looked into it further. And this started out as just trying to repair/replace what was there. I’ve not had any issues with it but I can see if it’s not rated for this setup that it could cause issues.

Yes. The motor turns smoothly as expected.

So just remove the single bolt attaching it to the motor? Should I remove the arms as well or just the center mount?

No, I meant after it stops and then you continue to turn it. Does the motor still keep turning ?

Well it seems to me you would want to make sure the motor is not binding the actuator. Not likely but possible.

May not be your problem but mine would do the same thing after I installed it.I had to
go through the bleeding process a couple
    more times.

Oh sorry. No. The motor cylinder is fully extended at the time it stops and doesn’t travel any further.
