They come out better if you paint the body first. Sand any rough edges off of the bill and put a drop of epoxy on the end and push in flush. Clear coat the as normal

Why do they come out better if you paint the body before putting the lip on?

    Just curious

I still don't understand why a bait would look any better if you add the lip after you paint the body....

Guess that is why I am not a pro I suppose

I would think you would want to attach lips before painting to avoid to much contact with fresh paint and to ensure a proper fit. Never painted one like this though so I can't say from experience.

You can do it anyway, if painting the lure first you just do not see the paint on the bill like a original DT.
If you clear coat twice, clear it once without the bill in and then second coat have the bill in, I use 30min epoxy and stick it in when I do my second coat.
    Super glue will work also.

Make sure bill fits properly before painting.

The DT 10 and DT 16 are the only ones that do not have the bill attached.

Just ask Tater Hog, He does his that way. He puts the bills in after painting the bodies. Having nothing to tape off equals a very clean bills put in. Saves a lot of time, by not having to tape off every single bait. Time is MONEY!!

I can see doing that if you actually build the bait.

Thats what I was meaning by pros, The guys that build there lures and paint them. The ones that have proven themselves by making a nice living at it. I admire the work thats goes into custom built baits. Each lure builders have a unique touch of their own. Just like the ones I painted for Marty, Awesome looking balsa cranks. Glad I had the chance ot paint some nice customs.

Yeah, tater really builds some really nice stuff. I can only imagine how much time it takes him to full detail out of bait when shaping the gills, eye sockets, etc. Then you have to paint it

Marty builds some great baits as well. They catch fish and they are durable. There isn't many balsa baits that you can say are really tough and durable. I have Marty build me up several at different times for customers and myself.

I would like to build my own but, I barely have enough time to get my painting done.

Taters stuff is not individually carved, he carved the prototype lure then made a mold for it so now all he does is pour foam into a mold .

Re: Need help on lure (Bass Boat TR21x05)

ok....seems logical that he would do that.

I have not gotten to look at his baits up close so I had not idea if they were foam or balsa
