Thumbs Up Best Unit for Side Imaging

I responded to a post on one of the Humminbird Facebook groups and thought I would also post it here for input and debate.

    Here was my response:

Most people would agree that Humminbird still has the best Side Imaging of the 3 leading freshwater fishing electronics producers. As for which Humminbird model has the best for side imaging, it would be those with SI+ (Helix G3/G4, Solix G2/G3, and Apex), and all of these will be very close to each other.

There are those who claim that the Solix and Apex SI+ models have better imaging because each imaging piezo is grounded separately and, therefore, produces a cleaner image. I've never had Helix so I haven't been able to do that comparison myself.

In my personal opinion, the Apex has the best SI+ because SI really benefits from the Apex full HD resolution... the highest resolution of the Humminbird models. Although things like 2D and Mega Live don't really benefit much from the increased resolution, SI+, DI+, and Mega 360 definitely benefit from the higher resolution. On those technologies, fine details can make a real difference.

As for screen size, bigger is definitely better when it comes to SI... Especially if you want to display multiple images on the display at once.

Side to side width is the key on SI clarity. With the more square shaped unit you have to cut back on the range to see detail. The difference between 100 and 50’ range is dramatic as an example. With a narrower screen you could divide the screen into 2 panes and put left and right on top of each other for more clarity if your unit supports that. Some have even used 2 units side by side and put left on one and right side on the other. The HD shapes are better for SI. Especially the FHD monitors. JMO Bob

    All SOLIX/APEX/Helix support that.
You can create a New View split screen with left side and full right side SI using SOLIX and APEX units.
It is in the VIEW rotation with a Helix.

This is a Gen 1 Helix:

It can be done with any ONIX/ION/SOLIX/APEX that has Side Imaging, but it takes some setting up.
Could do that before the Heiix units got that view choice.

Create an over/under view with both being Side Imaging.
Turn off Globals for both views so they don't share settings.
Select the left side for one view and the right side for the other view.

It's been several years since I did that, you may have to also turn Globals off for every SI view you have so the settings are not shared.

I tried turning of “Globel Settings” in the general tab but that didn’t work. I can’t toggle them to one side - only one option for both

The General tab concerns sharing settings between UNITS. You have to turn off the VIEW globals.

Yeah, turning off Globals can be tricky because there are so many different areas which have Global settings.
