Replacing a Torquemaster with Fleetmaster Gear Case

My Torquemaster lower unit had some problems so I had to replace it. It was replaced by a new Fleetmaster gear case since Mercury no longer makes the Torquemaster.

Anyone see any real disadvantage to using the Fleetmaster in place of a Torquemaster? The option of using the Verado style gear case was just too expensive.

Are the Fleetmaster gear cases being used on the new Pro XS motors coming off the current assembly line at Mercury or are they all using the Verado style gear cases?

Re: Replacing a Torquemaster with Fleetmaster Gear Case (BrownTrout)

All new 3L ProXS engines in production are using the Verado Style Gearcase.

The Fleetmaster is essentially the exact same gearcase as the Torquemaster- it's simply missing the "cast in torque tab" on the starboard side of the skeg.

BTW... the Verado gearcase IS CONSIDERABLY less expensive than the Torquemaster or Fleetmaster....

Hi Jim. Not sure where you received the information that a Torquemaster is no longer available? My motor is a Pro XB 20 EFI and this link still shows the availability of a Torquemaster L/U. http://www.dougrussell.com/ Pricey for sure. My serial number is 0T430630 if that assists you.
I own a Pro XB 250 EFI and assume that both are the same? Might be that one is "small" shaft and the newer is "fat" shaft? Hope that this might help? I am sure that in either case, Don will be along to save the day.

Re: Replacing a Torquemaster with Fleetmaster Gear Case (oldgeezer)

I should have stated that more clearly. It's my understanding that Mercury MAY still make the Torquemaster but only as replacements gear cases for older motors in need of a new LU. They are not manufacturing them for the Pro XS motors any longer as Don Weed mentioned. The new Pro XS motors will now have the Verado style gear case.

The Torquemaster has a HD "fat shaft" gear case, while the Verado style gear case has the smaller standard shaft.

Wish Mercury would give it a name instead of calling it the "Verado style" gear case as there is a lot of confusion on this LU right now.

I hope there will not be a problem with warranties on lower units, now that the "Verado" lower will not have a factory built-in torque tab. Adding one is considered "modifying" the lower unit.

Lots of boats that have lowers without torque tabs have bad crabbing of the motor.
