    Maybe a dumb towing question

I have always used a vehicle with a 2 inch drawbar to tow my boats. Right now, I'm using my wife's Subaru Outback to tow my small Lund. But, since she often needs the car when I want to go fishing, I am thinking about getting a hitch on my Subaru Crosstrek. However, the hitch for this vehicle only comes with a 1 1/4 inch drawbar. Can I put a 2 inch ball on a 1 1/4 inch drawbar? In my nearly 40 years of towing, this has never come up before!

That's what I had when I towed my old Tracker PT185 with my Jeep GC.

1 1/4 drawbar is rated for 200 lbs tongue weight and 2000 lbs tow weight.

With a couple good drill bits the diameter of the shank of the ball and a good Milwaukee or Dewalt, you can put a 2 inch ball on about anything.

I had one on a older Buick front wheel drive to pull a dirt bike trailer. The ball was a reduced shank if I remember right. But well within the needed rating. Cj

I would be leary of doing this mod. Just guessing it is sized for the vehicles load ratings. Whatever sized ball you attach. JMO Bob

Have you checked the towing capacity of the Crosstrek, specifically with regards to its ability to stop your boat and trailer? I have a Crosstrek and it strikes me as lightweight and squirrelly.

Towing capacity on the Crosstrek is 1500 pounds. I will be weighing my Lund shortly, but I think it's well under that weight. When I towed the Lund with my wife's Outback last fall (2500 pound towing capacity), it towed and stopped great and got 24 mpg in the process.

Keep in mind your listed hull weight does not include every thing in/on or bolted to it.

Think.........can you stop it ( not pull it......your riding lawnmower will pull it)? On a steep ramp or slick ramp will your boat pull your vehicle in the drink? It happens more than you think! Don't do the bare minimum.........figure in a good safety factor!!
