    Trap Stick

Friend of mine won a gift cert from to put towards a custom rod in my summer fishing league - this is what i made him:

lamiglas mb84-1e-h glass crank stick - 7'0" Hvy. Fuji ACS seat, eva grips, amtack titanium guides (size 6 down to 4s) wrapped on top and a little custom decal work by yours truly.

my favorite rod to date - wish i could keep it!

    Re: Trap Stick (Fishndan)

its apparently waterproof vinyl - from a company called papillo. found them on ebay and they have an online store. I coated these with color preserver because i'm a bit concerned about the inkjet ink fading in the sun. The next batch i'm going to use some krylon matte finish with UV blocker first though - the preserver faded the white a little bit.

dude, that's a sweet rod. Very well done. Like your graphics work on the decals a lot. Haven't mastered the graphics yet, myself.

Looks great man...That paper is very good at holding color. I've been using it for my decals for about a year. I havent needed CP on it. The only concern I have is UV....I have a few rods that seem to have a bit of fading on the decal...but its hard to tell.

good to know. I have some UV blocking krylon around here somewhere. i should've been using that all along - eases my concerns though - at least if it ever does fade or turn to junk all i have to do is strip it and do another one. :)

I'll have to check out that Krylon...I've only noticed the fade on two rods...Only on the black background also. BTW, like the carbon fiber twill background...I've been doing that for some of my decals..having hard time finding a pattern that looks good....yours looks great. I can't find background art that has that size pattern to it.

if you use photoshop, check out deviantart.com. they have a ton of free brushes and patterns. I got the carbon fiber pattern there.

the key to getting them to look really good is when you create the image - set the size in Inches or MM, then set the resolution to something like 700-1000 pixels per inch. You will have a huge image - but any photo inkjet printer should go well past 1000 DPI.

Thats a really sharp rod, good work!

So what am I looking at on the butt section. Is that woven tubing or a decal, and what grips are you using.

    Re: Trap Stick (richard stone)

its a decal with a carbon-fiber background. the grips are just eva i turned on my lathe.

I used the mudhole trim ring/butt cap for the CRB system - looked great until i found out that the I.D. of the trim ring was the same O.D. of the blank. The ring is supposed to sit around a groove on the butt cap and then that seats onto the butt or the grip of the rod. I ended up cutting the lip off the butt cap so it sat flush, gluing the trim ring directly to the blank flush with the grips and then used a silver .44 mag shell casing to glue the butt cap into the end of the blank. i was pretty proud of myself for figuring that one out and getting everything centered properly

    Re: Trap Stick (btsmbass)

Good tip on the Krylon. I have a few holo decals that I think have faded.

How does the Lamiglas mb84-1e-h compare to the Seeker 706 S glass? It has a nice price!

Sweet job on the graphics! Nice looking build.

    Re: Trap Stick (CHM)

i personally like the seeker better in hand. The lami feels lighter but i really can't say cuz i don't get to fish this one. I have a seeker i use personally and it is one of my favorite rods. I will probably build one of these for myself sometime - think it would make a good med-deep diver rod.

Also - if you use the krylon - i would still use a coat of color preserver. I just did another one with only krylon and had a heck of a time getting the finish to level nicely.

    Re: Trap Stick (thedude)

heres another trap rod i just finished - this time a ccb86 lami composite. Little heavier, think i like the glass one better..... of course i like the glass one better, its not infected with that nasty graphite!

forgot to mention that both rods are being tested on sam rayburn right now.... hopefully the guys will send me a few pics of 10lbers caught on these
