    Spiral guides

Hey all, I have been building rods for a few years and am about to start a new Lamiglas crankin rod. I am debating spiral wrapping the guides. I have never done this and am wondering the pros and cons. I will be throwing alot of rattle trap type baits and deep cranks. I don't want to sacrifice casting distance though. And thoughts?

    Micro or Non-Micro guides?

The reason I ask is I think the benefits of a spiral arent nearly as noticible with the micro's as they are with larger guides.

    Reasons to spiral.
More stable under load (I know Alex, we don't fish on one plane ), in the stability makes it easier to fight a larger fish. I think you will notice this more with flipping/pitching than anything else.

Less guides = Less weight. With the spiral I do I can usually eliminate at least one guide from a layout. With larger guides it was a big difference....with micro's...not so much.

Honestly...it's not a HUGE difference. I personally think it makes the rod a little bit better than a non-spiral rod...BUT...if I build two identical rods with one spiraled and the other not..you probably couldnt feel much of a difference.

I would be using the regular guides. I haven't seen anything with micro guides yet. Send me a pic to my e-mail

Scott - it's like you read my mind...

but I do agree with you on heavy cover pulling out 5# fish with 10# of weeds!

Interesting point on it not being as different with micros. never thought of it that way.
