ok I'll give you what I know(which isn't much) A few years ago(like 15) I went to a local boat show around the time that Zell's pop-r mods were just starting to leak out,Zell was a speaker at the event after the event I went up and talked with him for about a half hour and asked him about the pop-r's, he actually had one with him and let me look at it and actually answered every question I asked(good guy), basically he told me to thin it down evenly on both sides of the body from mouth to tail to the point that you could squeeze the bait with your fingers and feel the bait give, you'll know when your getting close because the plastic will start to look translucent. He never shaved the bottom lip or any of the other things people used to speculate about, the bait spits and walks better just by shaving the sides.He had it down to an art form and could tell you the number of strokes it took using sandpaper to get it done. I've ruined alot of them trying to get it right, to speed the process I use a emory board and basically file down the sides keeping it in a oval shape I finally learned in my opinion that with the weight of the hooks it didn't have to be exact. His were paper thin on the sides tapering up to the top no need to file the top or bottom of the bait.
But with the baits that are on the market now, lucky craft g-splash,mega bass pop-x I don't think their is much of a need to modify pop-r's other than you feel like sanding....
