My 2010 ranger will be here this week.. It will have a merc 250 pro xs...My last few have had yamaha's...What is the break-in precedure on the merc...I know it will be in the manuel when I get the boat, but I was curious..
Be sure to allow the engine to warm up before heading out. A Smartcraft Instrument (allowing you to "see" the engine temp) is highly recommended.
During the first 1-2 hours of operation, avoid raising the jackplate (if equipped). Try to keep the engine trimmed "down"... don't raise it beyond the "vertical" trim position (level).
Run the engine up to RPM's SLOWLY... perhaps 500 RPM's at a time being added. You'll want to run the engine in the 4000-5400 RPM range (varying RPM's every 2-3 minutes) for the first two hours.
Once 2 hours have been "clocked", you can begin to use normal trim and jackplate operation. Full throttle is acceptable for short runs (again, continue to vary the RPM's every 2-3 minutes).
At ten hours.... commence "normal engine operation".![]()
