Thread wise, I know how to finish the wrap, but how do you start the wrap? (knots? loops?) How tight do you wrap the thread?

It's hard to explain how to start a wrap, but if you go to mud holes site and under rod building 101 look for Kevin Brotz how to videos(they're free. right on the site). Straight forward and easy.
As far as thread tension goes I like mine tight because when you add the color preserver it will loosen the threads some.
Thanks for the reply, I'll check out the video.
If you still have questions, I have produced an instructional DVD that describes rod repair in great detail. One of the items covered is how to replace a damaged guide. I show each step of the process...then you will realize that anybody can repair their own rod!
If you'd like me to ship you a DVD, just drop me a line. You can see the cover on my website homepage.
Best regards.....George
If you are in a pinch, i's kinda like "whipping" the end of a rope. Not exactly, but close.

Kind of hard to explain how tight since the mettalic threads you can't get them very tight like you can the regular thread.
Thanks, George & the rest of you guys that replied. I watched the video then went home & wrapped the guides on a rod. They might not be as pretty as some but I think I did OK. Last night I applied flexcoat to them & it turn out better than my 1st attempt. I ordered the flexcoat book on rod making. That will probably help me out a bunch.
Brett.
What device are you using to wrap your guides? Do you have a rod wrapper? If not, a cardboard box with "V" notches at each end works great. You can put your thread in a shotglass and run it through a book to act as a tension device.
I did this for a while and it works like a champ.![]()
I actually welded up some stands using scrap plate, 1/2" rod, & 1-1/2" angle. I bought a drying motor of ebay for $15 & thats all I got in it. I am using the phonebook trick although, I'm brainstorming right now for a tension device I can fab up. Thanks for the tip.
Cool. Your well on your way sir.![]()

For a tension device you could use threaded rod and build an L stand. Put the threaded rod through the top of the stand and secure with a couple nuts. then get some fender washers, springs and wingnuts and run it: washer->thread spool->washer->spring->washer->wingnut. Then on the bottom of the L shaped stand you could epoxy an old spinning guide as a thread guide to keep it manageable.
I'm not good at explaining things. I hope that made sense.![]()
Brett...
Shoot me an email and I'll send some pictures of my set up. One trip the hardware store and you'll be set.
Good luck......George
