    College Football Transfer Portal

Wow - I never thought we would see so many players entering into the portal, especially from the big-name programs. I like the idea of the players having the option to move around, but it's going to make it even tougher to hold your team together. Unfortunately, the NIL monies have also added to this problem so there is limited loyalty to any particular school. Coaches are going to have to work hard to find guys who are truly committed to their program and willing to wait for their turn to be the main guy. It will get even tougher for the top teams who recruit multiple 4* and 5* players for the same position, as those players won't wait long. A coach has to become more of a "general manager" now than just a coach.

With NIL money now to be had, the transfer portal now makes college players free agents every season.

As far as basketball and football, the age of collegiate amateur sports is over.

NIL now makes it semi pro football, not collegant. If a player is good he's crazy not to see how much someone else is willing to pay him to play.

In a way it may level the playing field by allowing some teams to get players they never could have recruited. I remember in the 1980's and 1990's most Florida players would choose between FSU, UF and Miami and having a near monopoly on recruiting in Florida by those schools made them the top programs back then. As players from Florida started getting recruited by other schools it started to level the playing field a bit. I'm not real happy about the money side of College Football but the horse has left the barn so there is no going back. I guess there are pros and cons like everything else. As someone stated on TV "The portal giveth and taketh away." Definitely going to be another thing coaches will have to succeed at to keep their programs competitive.

Someday there will be caps on portal money just like salery caps for the pros. Nebraska has some really big donors which should help our program some. Rumor says they are trying to buy the Ohio State Quarterback that entered the portal.

I think the players should have to sign contracts now that make them stay where they were recruited, but that's just me.

Was watching a program and they talked about how it is against the Ivy League rules for a player to play a 5th year so the Ivy League players are very active in the portal. There is no redshirting in the Ivies and the student athlete would need to leave the school for a certain period in order to come back and play.

what's your thoughts on the schools having to honor the scholarship for the entire four years, or if say the coach who recruits them leaves or gets fired?

The schools should definitely have to honor the scholarship, but I honestly don't know how that works. As far as the coach leaving, that's no different than pro players if the coach leaves. They sign a contract for a reason.

I don’t fully understand this process. Local college coach here said he was not interested in paying millions for a player. do these guys actually get paid to switch schools from the one they committed too?

Or the Academic side of the schools need to set criteria on how frequently they can transfer and maintain eligibility to maybe curtail things a bit?

Absolutely they do. In fact, many of the big time players who enter the portal only do so for one reason, and that's to re-negotiate and try to get more money from the school they are currently at. If the school fears the player leaving to go play elsewhere, they may pay him more to stay. They are basically testing the waters to see if another school will pay more and if so, if their current school will match or exceed it.

Let's start with the coaches first. They break contracts all the time.

Just let them transfer one time in their college career. That's it. It's getting crazy.

Agree, but it has been this way for a long time. Now, it’s on top of the table whereas historically, it has been under the table.

That’s most likely what will happen, one transfer and then a graduate transfer plus a cap

I used to be a major college football fan, but with fishing more and the changes in CFB I'm very much a casual fan now. The thing that made college football special was regionality, and that players chose school based on where they wanted to go. With conferences shifting (WSU fan, we got left on the outside of realignment), and NIL money, it seems more and more just like a pro minor league. I don't have a problem with players getting paid, but I have a problem with that fact that none of the TV money / ticket sales / other football revenue goes to players. Nope, fans are begged to dump piles of money into these NIL collectives, just to sign a 17 year old who will likely transfer out at the first sign of adversity or a slightly better NIL deal. I can't think of a worse use of money than dumping it in an NIL collective. At least if you burned the money you get to watch a fire and might get some heat out of it
