    1988 150 xr4 Assembly

Have come across a 88 1150 xr4 that is disassembled with machine work complete and includes rebuild kit. I have never done a complete rebuild but have tinkered with old auto motors over the years, how much of a job am I getting into? Is this something a garage weekend hobby guy can do or how much should I expect some to charge to assemble and ready to put on my boat?

If you are mechanical then you can do the job. That being said you need to get the Mercury service manual for your motor and follow it to the T. Make sure you have all the oil bleeder lines installed correctly. It would be best to replace the reeds. Timing the engine isn't that difficult. The rest is pretty well straightforward. Replace the water pump impeller, double oil the engine on break in. And for goodness sake do not bypass the oil pump.

Keep in mind the age of the engine... parts are rapidly becoming obsolete.

I agree, remove it completely, Mercury makes a block off plate for it.

The fact that you asked question, I would say don't touch it! This does require an advanced level skill set with a mechanical background, factory service Manuel and some special tools.
    Thank You Leon Pugh
