2001 225 efi knocking under load

The boat idles well with no noise and will idle in gear with no noise. When I take off i get a loud knocking noise. Compression is good on all cylinders. I think it could be a bad clutch dog but im not 100%.

Good starting point is to check gear lube for contamination or metal, verify proper shift-cable adjustment.
