    Long block (auto) valuation effect?

How would you value a dealer/indy-installed long block ($15K) that includes a 3 year warranty - value before replacement:

    10 y/o truck KBB/NADA $28K?
    15 y/o truck KBB/NADA $18K?
    20 y/o truck KBB/NADA $10K?

WOW I guess I have been out from that a long time, but what type of Long Block? That looks like pricing for a diesel long block?
Anyways, there are more things to consider, transmission, transfer box, suspension components, tires, interior wear and tear, ...., just not the engine.

I struggled with properly presenting this question and probably still muddied it. How much additional value results from a long block w/warranty versus the exact (condition, etc.) same truck before its catastrophic failure? In theory, it is also applicable for those considering repair/replacement of their outboards…

I am an old guy. 10 years ago, 1995 GMC 1500 4x4, 235000 miles on it. I had cracked exhaust manifold, so to fix that and I was going to redo the heads, would cost me $2500 or I could by a NEW Factory Short block and I added stubby headers, plus or minor new stuff and install it myself for $3500. I bought the New Short Block for the Local Chevy dealer. I had a 5yr warranty.
(Reman Short Blocks were $2100 with a 3ry warranty.)

Probably wouldn't give you 10K for a 20 yr old truck if it had a new engine in it.

I don’t think adding a new engine to an old truck or boat adds very much value, certainly not enough to recoup the cost. People buy those expecting them to have an operable engine(unless non-running is reflected in the price) so you haven’t added very much to the value. It’s like putting new tires on a truck or new batteries in a boat, you haven’t added anything extra to increase the value, you’ve just kept it operable. Personally, I would pay a little more for a truck with a new engine but not enough to cover the cost of it.

Really all depends. It would be worth something extra to me but not the next guy. I would not expect to even break even on money spent. But if you consider that the truck is almost worthless without a good engine then it could add value to a broken truck! Trucks bring top dollar if they are in good condition.
