    AT1 "Update timed out"

I have a Carbon 12 and AT1. A couple months ago I started getting a blank screen on AT on the initial startup for the day. I could restart the AT box a couple of times and it would eventually start working. Once working, it was good to go for the day. More recently, I would have to restart AT multiple (sometimes up to 30) times before it would start working. Again, once working it was good to go for the day.

I contacted Lowrance and they said my AT box was probably going bad. They sent me a new box and transducer and I installed it yesterday. Per their instruction, I updated the Carbon to the latest release. (23.3-67.3.32) I then tried to update the new AT box and I’m getting a “Update timed out” error. The lights on the box are showing normal operation. Amber/green power, flashing ethernet and solid transducer. Tried a new ethernet cable and I got the same result. Has anyone had the “update timed out” error before?

First thing to always try is download the update again from Lowrance. Put it on an empty mSD card and retry. Also make sure you are downloading the correct version for your hardware. When you start the update you should see a progress bar showing that the upload is progressing. But to answer your question, no I’ve personally never seen a module update time out like that.

I downloaded the file again (ActiveTarget-23.3-67.3.32-Standard-1.riw) and loaded it to a fresh card. Still getting the same error. The progress bar never moves beyond 0%. I have a message in to Lowrance. Hopefully I'll hear back soon.

Are you using an mSD card that is smaller than 32 mb?

    It's mSD, but I believe it's 128GB.

That is your problem, it must be 32gb or smaller, formatted to FAT32.

Just bought a new SanDisk 32GB card and formatted to FAT32 on my PC. Downloaded a fresh copy of the update and tried again. Same error.

I appreciate the suggestions. Lowrance has not responded to my latest email. I'm going to try to call them tomorrow afternoon.

Yes. I've even tried a new ethernet cable.

Marc...I am following your steps. I watched several of your videos before I tried the update.

Is the ethernet cable connected directly between your AT box and your Carbon that you are placing the card in (or does it go into a NEP or SS3D box)? Have you tried moving the cable to another ethernet port or another unit?

You may want to try copying the update from the sd card to the units internal storage and run the update from there. I have experienced a simular issue updating a 3D box. No rhyme or reason, but the update would fail/timeout every time, but if I copied the update to the units internal storage it worked every time.

Has this been resolved yet? I just did mine with no issues whatsoever. Can the OP please look at the size of the file downloaded? Is it 53.4 MB? What browser are you using for accessing the Lowrance site?

Sorry for the delay in replying to this thread, I've been out of pocket. Ethernet is connected directly from the AT box to the back of the Carbon. I've tried both ethernet ports on the unit, as well as a new ethernet cable. The file size is 52,132KB. I've tried Edge and Chrome on two different PC's. I'll try to copy the file directly to the internal storage of the unit as ChuckH suggested and report back.

Just another thought for you to consider. I wonder if you have a wiring issue with your AT box...you mentioned you had issues especially recently with getting a blank screen and needing to restart it over and over. This indicates either a wiring issue or your AT box going bad. Either situation could be why you are not able to update the box. I am leaning towards a bad box since you stated you get a blank screen, rather than a "no source" screen.

If your power light flashes from amber to green and you are getting a blank screen, and you have verified the ethernet cable is good, and you tried diffferent ethernet ports on different units, then I would have to suspect it is a bad box. I would call Lowrance customer service and ask for Level 2 support.

Here is an update on my update/blank screen saga. I tried copying the file to the internal storage on my Carbon and still got the timeout error. Next step...I borrowed an HDS Live from a buddy. I hooked up his unit, using all of my existing wiring and the same sd card, and was able to update the AT box with no problem. So now I have the latest software on the Carbon and on my AT box.

Got out on he water over the weekend and still got a blank AT screen when I first fired up my Carbon. Even if I reboot the unit and AT box several times, it's still a blank screen. But it gets even weirder...I can plug in the borrowed HDS Live to my existing wiring and I get a perfect AT image. After I use the HDS live for a few minutes, I can power everything down, swap back to Carbon and everything fires up perfect! It's good to go the rest of the trip. (besides the annoying "no source" screen every few minutes...but that's a minor issue for me at this point). This same scenario played out on three separate trips this weekend, so I know it wasn't just a one off deal.

Lowrance customer service has been pretty responsive. They sent me the new AT and communication has been good. I'm just getting tired of not being able to go fishing without fighting with my electronics.

Well we are all probably guessing at this point considering your particular fact pattern, but my guess is that you have a problem with your Carbon or a wiring issue or even a transducer connector problem since you have already replaced the box and ethernet cables. I would keep working with Customer Service.
