Well, there goes another $50. I do like the look of the clips over the Cal Costas
I used them for the last couple of tourneys this year. They work great but i do have concerns regarding the longer term durability. The plastic that was used for the floating buoys and the spots where the clips connect look and feel very fragile.
Bought the scale..............no tags............yet.
There are definitely concerns regarding the size of the clips in the BUBBA cull system. The clips are the exact same size as the clips on the BUBBA scale(s), and as such are comparatively larger than most. Several articles have been written by fisherman, and biologist, which state their concern over the potential negative effects of these large clips. What they have found is that the use of these larger (and heavier) clips prevents the fish's mouth from closing fully/properly... which prevents them from breathing properly and causes additional unnecessary stress to the fish in the live well. Again, there is concern that this increases fish mortality, particularly after release...due to the prolonged stress and the delayed effects of diminished oxygenation (Spending all day in the live well with hindered breathing).
For the record, I have the BUBBA Pro scale and the BUBBA cull system/tags. After seeing how large the terminal clamps were, I elected not to use them. I've continued to use my cold tags with the smaller conservation clips.
Other than that, the cull tags appear to be of good quality, particularly for the price. I had hoped that I could simply change the clips on the BUBBA tags and continue to use the colored floats (to match the BUBBA Pro Scale colors)...but they are made in a manner that prevents this/is not possible. 🫤
I'm about a year into using them. No issues at all. Have not had one come off nor have I had one harm a fish. Good system to me. Easy to use the clips one handed too.
I replaced my Cal Coast 2.0 with the Bubba tags. Much easier to use than the Cal Costa. I was a bit concerned on the size of the clips but so far it hasn't been an issue.
I’ve never had good luck with these style tags where they just clip in the fishes mouth. I’ve had them knock them off in the livewell and also had fish die before with their jaws wide open. I’ll just stick to using my hands to cull. If I have two fish that are close to size, I’ll throw a clip on each for the balance beam but that’s about it. Only sure way I know to keep the fish alive. Hopefully these help all of you though! Be nice to have a set that actually work!

Good to hear. Will be interesting to see what the research shows in the years to come. We are also seeing the increased use of dorsal fin cull tags, which furthers my curiosity about traditional mouth/lip cull tags.
If its a concern just interchange the clips
