How much are you willing to spend on a rig with no engine warranty?

In 50 years of owning boats. Used a warranty one time for fuel injectors. Bought my current boat 10 years ago with no warranty.

I bought both of my boats over the past 15 months and neither had any motor warranty but both were very low hours. But then my itty bitty outboards don’t cost as much to replace if one blows.

This goes for me too. My max would probably be 25k, but a cream puff with good electronics could get me to 35-40k. Once over 40, might as well go to 60

I’m in the same mindset. I’ve owned so many used motors and either done most of the work myself or let the shop have it. Warranties are nice, but it doesn’t really matter to me. I’m a stickler for preventive maintenance, but if the powerhead blows, I guess I’ll buy one.

Had a friend who went to another state and bought a Ranger from a guy for 20K and didn’t even drive it. The guy worked for Ga. Power and didn’t have time to use it. Motor had less than 100 hours. We both felt it was a once in a lifetime deal. Spot on after 5 years.

I have never bought a boat new enough to be under warranty, and have never had a problem that would be covered by warranty.

Same here, I don't get why so many people think they must have a warranty. Hell If I had a warranty I would not use it I would rather fix it myself.

$19,500. That’s what I paid for a 2006 Garage kept Stratos 201 XL with a 2006 250 hp Yamaha HPDI with 650:hours. I have had it for four years and so far it has run great. The boat and trailer are in great shape. I have already gotten my money’s worth out of the gamble.

The condition of the tow vehicle will tell you about the boats condition, if the inside of the vehicle is all dirty, wrappers everywhere, food crumbs, dust all over the dash, interior windshield with a film on it, and the outside is similar condition, then that will tell you how the boat was kept, because anyone can get a boat cleaned up when it's for sale.

Easy rule of thumb on how well a individual maintains their vehicles and boats, ask then to pop the hood of the tow vehicle, if it looks like it hasn't as least been hosed down periodically at the minimum, then the boat was treated the same way.

Look at the gear they use, from my experience, people that take the extra effort to keep rod gloves and reel covers on the equipment they use, are meticulous about the boats maintenance also.

Is the spare original or has it been replaced when the trailer tires were replaced?

My boat will go up for sale in January, that thing got new tires every year including the spare, full detail 4 times a year, carpet vacuumed after every trip, rebuilt hubs every year, oil changes 4 times a year, gear fluid changes twice a year, a new impeller every year and so on, with all the receipts to prove it, but the outboard is out of warranty, the buyer will see the boat was well cared for.


Warranty doesn't help the buyer if the boat was neglected.

Cleanliness usually goes hand in hand with the proper maintenance of a vehicle, not always but most of the time.

Myself being a owner of rental properties, it's always the tenants that have the cleanest houses and yards that notify me the moment they have a issue with the house, or inquire about routine maintenance..
The slobs usually will notify me long after there is a problem, if I don't catch it before they do.

I've always said I would never-it out a lot of money for a rig without a motor warranty.I have two friends that had blown motors, one had the boat only two seasons and the other about 4. Both repairs were in excess of $5K. Our seasons are probably 1/3 of you guys down south.
