    Adjusting linkage on etec 150

I installed a new water pump a while back and since then the linkage seems to be a bit off. When I try to shift in reverse is grinds a little like it isnt going all the way in gear. Continuing to move lever trottles the engine up which makes it difficult to "ease" into gear. Wants to jump... if that makes sense.

Is there a procedure for making this adjustment?

I believe it is 20 15/16". Measured from the deck of the gearcase to the center of the shift rod eye in neutral.

Evidently I still don't have this correct.

When shifting into reverse it throttles up before it shifts into gear. Making the shift hard and sometimes grinding.
With that said... should the linkage be adjusted longer or shorter? Where is the correct place to adjust this?

Should only have cable adjustments at the motor. Sounds like throttle cable is off.

Are you sure the gear case was in neutral when you adjusted the shift rod? Did you drop the lower unit when you made the change to the shift rod height?

I did drop lower unit to replace water pump. Never messed with shift rod. I guess I should have measured it before reinstalling lower unit. I assumed I could fine tune it with the cables. I must be wrong on that?

Also, what should engine RPMs be set at idle?

Idle rpm is not adjustable. Normal idle speed is 550-500 rpm.

partial engagement of shift or less than full engagement of shift and then throttle starts to advance indicates the shift rod height is wrong or was not set starting in neutral.
this will also cause forward shift to engage to early. The shift cable trunnion is very close to running out of adjustment threads.

With the engine in neutral, drop the lower unit.
get to the measurement required for your motor. You will have to look that up.
then you can put the lower unit back on.
engine must be in neutral when you drop it and set to the measurement.
hope this helps. Probably when you changed the water pump, the rod spun a few times

    Thanks,

FYI. I do have software that allows me to adjust idle through ECU.

Only works on the G2's. But good thought.

Really? Dang... I use it to switch from XD50 oiling to XD100 and to monitor codes. I saw the option for adjusting idle so I thought I could really do it.

As a follow up to this. I removed the covers, removed the bolt connecting the shift linkage to the shifting rod. Moved shift lever to the forward position and was able to make one full turn of the shift rod with pliers. I reinstalled the linkage and it appears to be shifting properly without dropping the lower unit.
I must have accidentally turned it one round when replacing the water pump.
