I bought a Curado BFS reel and a Dobyns BFS rod. The rod is WAY TOO tippy for a jerk. What do y'all use for smaller jerks on BFS? My Powell 6104s are light and perfect for normal size jerks but seems like too much for 4 lb and BFS. On the flip side how about for larger heavier jerks like 130, Kanata size? They seem to be too much for the 6104.
For the heavier jerks go with the powell endurance 725 crankbait rod.
If a shorter 6'6" is acceptable, the Legit Design Stand Out 6'6"L would be an excellent choice for smaller mag-finesse jerkbaits.

You're welcome...granted there are likely quite a few options that would work well for you. If you are tossing more along the 5/16 - 3/8 weight range for lighter jerkbaits, the Phenix M1 6'9" ML might be worth a look as well. For me, a light jerkbait is 1/8-5/16, so it's all relative.

I use that 6104 for like a 110. I still feel that rod is a little soft to "snap" the bait. They did have a 695cb in the Max and I was wondering how that would work. I'm gonna try a spinning 6103 and see how that works. I'm a little irritated with Powell, no inventory on hand a lot of the time.Originally Posted by rudapa

In that weight range I use a custom light powered Lamiglas XMG50 SJ781 built spinning.
I think you would be best served with a light powered rod with a fast action, especially with lighter fluoro...if you go braid + leader, you may want to opt for a bit more mod-fast taper/action.

I didn't read the entire post. I think I'd be all in on a spinning outfit. I'm about to try braid to leader on spinning. Haven't tried it but DrewFlu mentioned it and I wanna try it.

I've got two different setups I can throw 1/4oz jerks on;
The first is a Kistler Helium HE70ML 7'0" ML/F rated 1/16-3/8. It's sweet spot is right at 1/4oz but it can also go down to 1/8oz, the Shimano slx bfs reel it's paired up with helps with this. The rod does not load well with 1/16oz despite it's stated rating. The second one is a Daiwa Tatula Seth Feider 6'9" ML/MF Topwater/Jerkbait rod paired up with an Alphas 800. On this setup 1/4oz is the lightest it can throw before casting gets squirrely, it can do 3/16 with a little reel tweaking, the top end feels like 1/2oz to me. Can't help with the big jerks.

Medium to larger jerkbaits, the alpha angler slasher does a great job. Spinning rod for 110 jr size.
Yea spinning is the REAL correct answer but I so much prefer a cranker!
I use a Conquest 782 and 783 depending on the size
Denali Lithium Pro Jerkbait rod is PERFECT for lures up to and including 110s. The bigger ones I use a Magabass Jerkbait Special.

The Megabass JDM Destroyer P5 Pop-X Stick for the BFS stuff. I have a 23 Conquest BFS on mine and it has been an absolute blast to fish the new Megabass BFS hard bait series. I've used the Vision 110 JR on this set up no problem as well.
The Megabass JDM Destroyer P5 Blade, at 6'8" and rated to 1 oz. has no problem handling the 1 oz Kanata. It's length, power, and action make working that Kanata easy and productive.

What LB test you using with your Pop-X and light jerks?
Daiwa J-Fluoro Samurai in 4# is what I have on this combo now and works great when throwing the Megabass BFS Hard Bait Series. Both the X-70 and X-80 have been very productive for me and I expect they will continue to be as the water gets colder this fall! I've used 6# in the same and it works just fine too. Part of the fun of the whole BFS thing is using lighter lines as well. Even though the Pop-X Stick is rated down to 6# test, the 4# is no problem on there at all.

I love this rod for smaller jerkbaits, seems the sweet spot is 1/4-3/8oz for me. Surprisingly, it also works well for full the full size Vision 110-so long as you use stock/light wire hooks and its not the +1 or +2 model
For the bigger jerks like a Kanata, I use a XX Diablo Spec R. Most of the in betweens I'll throw on a Destroyer Cyclone or EG Super Cougar
That's good to hear. I actually considered this rod for smaller 3/16-3/8 poppers, but I'll be going for a longer custom Lamiglas Infinity 702S built BC.
