KB..................I dont build baits but I do have a friend who builds alot of baits for saltwater stripers in the surf and he has a few really narrow ones that he drilled a 3/16-1/4" hole into... on an angle from front to back or vice versus depending on how you want the weight of the rattles move during the cast......
He then found some thin straw like tubing and slid it into the hole. First he epoxied a small disc of thin stainless steel(any metal can be used) that he punched out of flat stock
to one end of the disc. He then put a few metal balls that were slightly smaller in diameter than the tube. Then epoxied another disc on the other end of the tube.
You can really hear them when they hit the metal discs.
He does some with one ball, some with two and so on and so fourth....
You can really hear the difference in the way they rattle depending on how many balls you put in too!!!!
I am sure that there are other ways to do it but with the metal disc at each end it makes the rattle much louder than if it were hitting the wood itself!
