    08 225 optimax proxs coil

I have 22 hours on my motor and just had my third coil failure. It has not been the same coil failing it is a different cylinder each time. Is anyone else having this problem? I asked the tech if they have changed part numbers and he said no. So I am thinking I am stuck with this problem until Mercury comes out with a fix.

Are the coils failing "open-DOA" or "Shorted"?

Verify all connectors/pins/wires in the coil harness. Not just "at the coils"... but also at the larger "common connector" located near the top of the coil plate.

Any time multiple coil failures occur... it's a good idea to test the VRS (or CPS- Crankshaft Position Sensor) to ensure that it is not failing... should be 200 ohms or greater resistance.

Yes... we do see coil failures. Usually, when there are this many "repeats"- there is a reason.

Re: 08 225 optimax proxs coil (EuropeanAM)

Saturday when it was cold the coil was not working. So I called the dealer they said bring it in. I went to go to the ramp and it was running great. Took it to the dealer they put the scanner on it and nothing showed up. He told me there was nothing he could do until the coil failed. I go back to the lake and it starts acting up again, this time it does not ever go back to working correctly. So I have to make another 2 hour drive (each way) to get a coil replaced. It is growing old quickly. I told my wife we may be headed to S.C.

    Don,
When my coil on my 2008 225 Pro XS failed it id not show up on the DDT and PASSED all the tests with the Ohm meter per Mercury's test sheet. The plug for that hole was soaking wet and boat would not come up on plane. The plug was changed first with no improvement then the coil.

    Sterling and JazII:

Both of you are describing an "intermittent OPEN" coil failure. An open will only show up on the computer if the "Primary" side of the coil is open when the key is turned on, and the engine is "off". Once running... it won't show up.

An open "secondary" in the coil won't show up "ever".... (other than a noticable loss of power or misfire).

We've found the best means of catching these is to put a "6 cylinder spark tester" on all six spark plug wires, and run an "Auto Self Test- Plugs Out of Cyl. Head" on the Computer Diagnostic System. This "loads" all six coils... and you'll often catch the culprit. It may be necessary to "heat" the coils if it doesn't show up on the first try.

    Re: 08 225 optimax proxs coil (ssimpala71)

I spoke with Mercury about my concerns and they want the technician to call them when I bring my boat to them. They did mention heating the coils but there are some other test they want to conduct. They felt when they were done this time I should not have to much trouble. Don thanks for all your input on this board.

And, I bet I know exactly what test they're talking about!

If your dealer calls in... and follows the instructions, you'll more than likely be scooting across the water with a big soon!
