Is there a pending Yamaha 2021/2022 recall?

My dealer just called me to say he's hearing about a pending software recall on 2021/2022 200, 225, and 250 Yamaha outboards. He said it might have to do with fuel management. He didn't have any more info but wanted to let me know he'll get me in as soon as possible if it's released. Does anyone have any more info?

Yes there is a pending recall. Software change needed to update the ECU.

As it is, there is a possibility of an ignition coil being activated (spark plug fires) when the key is turned to the on position. If there was fuel in the cylinder, and conditions were just right, that fuel could be ignited.

The bulletin applies to LB and XB SHO models only by the way. Does NOT apply to LA models.

Thanks, Yam. That is a much better explanation than I received. I do appreciate the dealer calling me though. Thank you.

My son's being told he can't pick up his new Wx2060 till they do the recall on the engine. When he asked when that would be, they said they didn't know as they have no idea when they will be getting the new programing. I think they are bs'ing him and don't actually have his boat done. The boat was supposed to be done weeks ago, and they had 10 months to get the accessories that were supposed to be installed, yet when we went to show them where to mount everything a few weeks back, they hadn't even begun to order all the parts even though I gave them a list last fall. Bad enough it's been 11 months since ordered, but the least they could have done is to at the very least have ordered the parts once they knew the boat was built at the factory. Anyway, what I'm asking is, has anyone herd of a dealer not letting a customer pick up their new boat till this software is reprogramed? Also, any idea of when it will be available to the dealers?

Per agreements between Yamaha and Yamaha dealers, motors with open safety recalls are not to be delivered to the customer until the recall work is performed.

I have no idea when the updated software will be loaded into affected models.

To my knowledge the technical bulletin that addresses the recall work has not yet been issued by Yamaha US.

It is correct that the Dealer cannot deliver the engine until the recall has been fixed. At this time the dealers do not have the programming. My boat is on the list.

You can look at the number on the side of your engine and I believe it only effects the new model SHO. I got this from my dealer:

    2021 and 2022:
    Models VF200LB - Prefix 6KYL - Primary ID from 1000571 to 1001279
    VF200XB - Prefix 6LGX - Primary ID from 1000502 to 1001529
    VF225LB - Prefix 6KXL - Primary ID from 1000304 to 1000450
    VF250LB - Prefix 6KWL - Primary ID from 1001468 to 1002989
    VF250XB - Prefix 6LFX - Primary ID from 1001413 to 1003460
    2024 Skeeter ZXR20
    2024 Yamaha SHO 250

Look at your data plate. It should indicate your motor is a VF250LA model.

The recall applies to LB or XB models only.

    Or see post #11 above.

My neighbor just had (or attempted to ) it flashed. The Flash failed and now engine is waiting on part to replace (guessing ECM?).
They had told him less than an hour total. He missed the Labor day weekend but they told him it would be ready this week. I haven't heard any updates yet.

I have a 250 SHO that had this recall done on it but I’m still hearing something come on under the cowling when I use the trim with the key off and just the power on. Should it still do this?
