New SEI Lower - Metal Shavings

Had my lower unit replaced during in an insurance claim 6 months ago. There were no OEM lowers available anywhere in the country at the time, so I went ahead with an SEI. Given the warranty, I figured I would just take a chance.

I followed the recommended break in procedure. I also changed my lower unit oil three times just to keep an eye on things as I break it in. Every time I change it, I am seeing this on the screw plug.

I’m sure there will be varying opinions here, but looking for some sort of consensus. Is this real concerning?

Normal. One way to tell is to pinch it with your fingers, and if it turns into dust, it's fine. If it feels like it's actual flakes sticking into your skin, that's when you should worry.

Thats also the purpose of the magnet,to collect any metal and keep it from staying suspended in the lube and embedding and destroying the parts.

Thanks guys. Next time i change the lower oil, I’ll see if it’s fine particles or more chunks.

I’d call and send that picture to SEI and ask them. Maybe it might be “normal” for them. Sorry, but I’ve changed my share of lower unit oil (all major brands) and it’s never like that. The one time I saw it like that, the mechanic confirmed that the lower unit was shot when I brought it in. Yes, there will be some metal dust, but barely visible (and yes, very fine), not a big ball like that. Maybe a mechanic here can confirm. SEI has a great warranty, so definitely document with them what is going on.

Count to 10 for the “you get what you pay for” reply. I made this call years ago, SEI outlived my 200 Merc with 100+ hours on the LU. Buddies lower unit went, he borrowed it, it’s been 4-5 years and 200 hrs without a hick up. I like the product. You could buy 2 so you have a back up when they service any issues and still be less than OEM.

I ran one for 6 years on an older johnson. Was no option for OEM replacement.
