    Question Fall Grass seeding?

Will grass seed make it if I do a seeding and it sits waiting for rain? Do a few pretty good size areas of over seeding. Aerating first then seeding mix of mostly fescue with some perennial rye. Thanks

Most rye and related seeds are very tolerant of this.
the funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it

Now is the time to seed, if you can try to scratch it into the soil to maximize seed to soil contact.

I have some large areas to seed too. Am waiting until a few days before it rains to seed.

Didn't know if it's different since it's sealed in bag

I seeded a week ago, put a sprinkler on it a couple times a day, be ready to mow this weekend.

    Wish that was an option

I think dethatching gives a much better result when seeding in the fall. It will give the seed much more soil contact. I just finished dethatching mine yesterday and bagging up the dead matter. Wanted to get some seed and lime down this evening before the rain tomorrow but will have to wait. Watering is important but if it has soil contact it will more than likely take off at some point in the fall as long as you don’t get freezing temps

Grass seed typically carries over from one year to the next if kept dry (and keeping it cool as well). You lose some germination but probably not enough to notice.

Best time of year to seed. May be a few weeks late but you will still see germination. Last week in August always seems to be the optimal now here in the northeast.

The one problem you may encounter is the dew in the morning can gets the seed wet and then the seeds dries up each day. It’s not optimal, especially without proper ground contact. Make sure you do not over “over-seed” and then water the lawn with a sprinkler until you are seeing the grass growing.
After seeding you can spread peat moss across the area and lightly rake it to push it down to soil to help hold moisture. You can do the same with sand but it’s a lot more work.

I once backlashed a front yard. So, if you have centipede grass, don't dethatch it. You're welcome.

That is funny but never more true. I killed a big chunk of a saint augustine yard and the wife never fails to remind when I’m doing yard work to not mortally wound the grass.

Every year I plant food plots for deer and have to sit and pray for a rain afterwards. Birds pick some up but I run over the area with my disc before planting. Then kinda cover the seeds with a little dirt using the disc. Some years look better than others.

I seeded last Friday and it’s poured for the last 4 days. Do you think i’m ok?

I'm thinking of running the aerator over the bare spots/thin areas then seed with a Hydro seed spray on top. Any problem with this idea?

I live in East Tennessee and I aerate / over seed / fertilize on Labor Day weekend every year. This works for me as I do see germination in about 6-8 days. It does help if you keep it moist. I also see another germination period in the spring. I do have an irrigation system and run it twice a day during this period for about 5 minutes per section. I only want to keep the seeds damp.
