    Daughter College

First time on here in a long time.

My daughter got accepted to her dream college - Oklahoma. She wants to major in Meteorology with a focus on Climatology. Of course we won't get any help through FASFA. You guys that have gone through this, is there any good sites to look at for scholarship opportunities? With her test scores and GPA, she qualifies for a good chunk up front but that would bring the tuition down to the in state rate.

    Thanks for any help.

Lots of organizations have scholarships available. Everything from churches to service organizations (Lions, Kiwanis, etc.), corporations, and so forth. Her school guidance counselors should have a list of local groups who have scholarships.

Agree! My mom is on a committee that doles out $ from her little organization in Western NY. Not much, $1000 each to 4 students helps a bunch for them. I do know that the applications were sent to them early in their senior year so the awards could be presented before graduation.

It’s easier if you start when they are younger to build a resume. Volunteer work, summer programs working in similar fields, leadership positions in clubs and school, membership in certain organizations etc..

She needs to be doing things now to make her interest in the field stand out among the other applicants. Something like a part time job in some kind of weather monitoring activity. Her school guidance office should have a ton of info on where to look, but you/she may need to be proactive in finding opportunities.

Getting to know the faculty at the university is a huge deal when it comes to getting scholarships and fellowships after school starts. You need nominations and recommendation letters. Any summer programs in the school she’s going to be part of at OU or even at other schools or organizations.

Most careers in the field will require grad school, so she needs to plan for that as well, though there will probably be a stipend and tuition waiver for that.

    ^^^^ This.

Most importantly, treat getting a scholarship like getting a job.

Check with guidance counselor then get on the phone and starting asking. Generally with local scholarships whoever you speak with will be on the selection committee (or be the selection committee themselves). Remember many who control the $ are older (like in churches) so a short thank you note goes a long way, even for just a call (not an email or text). Have a script ready, have answers for the top 10 questions ready, fill out applications promptly, dress appropriate for any in person event.

In INDY it could be different than NYS but I will tell you my experience with my youngest son when he went to a SUNY (State University of NY) School. When it came to TAP, PELLA and other financial programs here is what I experienced.

They rope you in with good financial support for the students freshman year and then try to dwindle away the money for the rest of the years. I was on the phone MANY times each year that by the time he was a junior I knew the administrator of finance at that school personally via the phone. And that paid off BIG time over the four years he went there. So be prepared to pay more after her freshman year unless you are relentless on the phone asking/begging for more financial support. Don't take no for a answer as the colleges control the money to whom it goes to, no one else.
