    Wool Socks and Gloves

I fished with a guy back in March, 45 degrees and rain all day, He kept wringing out his gloves but said his hand was warm, I was not warm. When you search wool gloves the prices are all over the place, Does anyone have a brand they really like, and is wool better in boots also Thanks

Wool maintains its insulating property when wet, which few other fabrics do. In boots it’s important not to have sweat next to your skin, but I’m not sure how wool does in that regard. I’m not a fan of wool for gloves when fishing, though, because they tend to be slippery.

Smartwool socks are pretty good. My son lives in Co.,skies, snowboards, rockclimbs etc. and seems to prefer them over most other stuff.I have 1 pr. and like them as well.

I forgot about smartwool. Yes, they make great socks.

I wear wool for many things. These are great gloves. Nothing special, just a merino wool glove that holds up well.

For socks, I wear smart wool and darn tough brands. I wear wool socks all year. For the coldest weather, I will wear a liner sock under a wool sock. Trying some alpacca wool this year

Merino and Alpaca wool is best for socks, soft not scratchy. I have Merino wool long underwear from Filson, pricey but worth it. Wool has different types and grades, get cheap stuff you will hate it, buy good stuff you will love it. Wool wickes away moisture from the skin and keeps you warm even when wet.

I wear Smartwool Maximum Cushion Hikers anytime I'm getting cold and/or wet. Combined with a good boot, I'm good to icefish all day or deerhunt the hill country north of the White Mountains. I buy G.I wool glove liners by the balle and either wear them by themselves or with a cotton jersey glove inside in wind or snow. It's the same gear I wear for working outside (contractor) in the winter. The GI liners are hook magnets though...

Wool is the cat’s ass for cold and wet conditions. Cotton kills, avoid it like the plague.

The simms half finger wool gloves are my favorite. Like said earlier, even when wet they stay warm.

Smartwool, Wigwam Ironman series and EMS brand socks are my favorite. Darn Tough socks are my favorite. They’re expensive but a pair will last years. I won’t go hiking without those

Back in the day, I always had a pair of fingerless wool gloves for winter crappie fishing. Biggest problem was hooks kept getting snagged in them, but hands stayed warm.

I love fishing in the wool fingerless gloves with the mitten type cover that goes over the fingers. Have been using them for years. Looked all over for them last year but couldn’t find any. Anyone knows who has them. I would use the above recommendation if I can’t find the others. Thanks

Illinois Glove Company makes them. I’ve been using their fingerless ones for a couple years now. American made from what I can tell…and available on Amazon. They run big. I wear the smalls even though their sizing says large. They remind me of the old thinsulate brand wool mitten fold overs, so I bet they would work for you.

Darn Tough are great socks. I haven’t had good luck with smartwool socks - although I love their baselayers. I’ve hiked thousands of miles and I only wear darn tough at this point

I like minus33 merino for their thin gloves and beanies. Super comfy - and the beanie is really soft.
