We must be the odd man out in Michigan. We have a voter-passed initiative that only allows your property taxes to go up at the rate of inflation. I bought my house 10 years ago and it has more than doubled in value. My property taxes have gone up a negligible amount during that time. There is no way my parents would be able to afford their current house without that law because of how much it has increased in value, but because of it, they live very comfortably. We have an income and state sales tax in Michigan, but at the end of the day the government will get their money; there are just various ways of getting it. I'm thankful that we do not have a personal property tax or toll roads. I don't like the idea of constantly being nickle and dimed.

Oh they pay taxes but don't realize it since the landlord (property owner) includes that into the rent. He certainly isn't going to pay taxes without collecting enough rent to cover all expenses and make some profit. That's what amuses me when people say "I'll never own a home and I'll always rent because I don't want to pay taxes and upkeep on a home". Yes you do, it's just done through your landlord in life long rent payments.

If someone has investment or rental property or was looking to cash out its a great time to sell but if you still need a primary residence it's all artificial values.

Yep, I've never owned a house that was valued for as much as the one I'm in now. . . . . on paper

Are you sure it is tax assessment. Ohio is doing their 3 or 6 yr property appraisals. I'm in Hamilton county and my property value went up 56%. You knew with the housing market upswing and people paying over inflated prices that the state was going to get in on the action. All I can say is " Bend over"

Ga. gave us two rebates this year...one for cash back because we had a surplus......500 for couples or 250 for singles....Got a property tax rebate also worth about 400......Didn't stop the cities and counties from raising rates tho ...

The good thing about property taxes is that they are local taxes. It’s easier to track the money and talk to the people in charge of spending it so you know what is going on. A large percentage of property taxes typically go to the school district. We all know that teacher pay sucks! It’s been a problem for years. Increasing property taxes is the easiest dial to turn to deal with the issue. I don’t mind paying local taxes like property taxes, I’m way more concerned about the untraceable federal income taxes I pay.

I’m just as happy here and couldn’t imagine life being any better. Wife and I both worked hard all the 49 years we’ve been married, raised three well educated and successful daughters and haven’t owed anyone a penny for at least 15 years. Life is indeed good. Enjoy.

Travel sports teams no longer just play local/regional games, they always seem to manage a Myrtle Beach "classic", or an Orlando tournament, etc. Its about the experience................

Yep our local school district just approved 48 million to renovate and old Sears store at a mall for a votech center. When they have a perfectly good votec center. Waste waste waste.

How much land? Can you get some kind of ag exemption ?
down here we have 40 acres cleared about 6 of it and we filed for timber exemption on the remaining for the rowed pine. Look into your assessment office to find out more, I guess if your in a neighborhood and not rural your pretty much screwed , to me $6k a year would be worth selling a house and moving out to rural because over time it is not worth it

I live in central Illinois and yes everything is pretty much taxed plus RE taxes at 3% of market value. Been here all my life and because of family and business were here to stay unless pensions and retirement plans start getting taxed and then the exodus starts
