Considering repower to 2016 Pro XS 250, advice?

    Hi,

I have the opportunity to re-power with a 2016 Pro XS 250 with only 58 hours. It currently belongs to the friend of a friend and was supposedly "meticulously maintained".

I fully intend on having my own mechanic check it out, do a compression test, check the lower unit, etc. I think I could probably run it too, as it's still on the back of his Ranger at the moment.

But I was wondering if the 2016s were a good or bad year for those engines, or if there's anything in particular for that year I should make sure my mechanic checks. I saw the list in the FAQ for the "considering buying a used engine", so I have that. just wasn't sure if there was something else to keep an eye out for with that year, especially with how low those hours are.

I know Mercury doesn't really do "years", but I don't have the serial # just yet. Still super early in the process. So any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!
    -Nate

Since Mercury doesn't use "years" it would be a good idea to get the Serial Number.

Otherwise- have it checked out and base your decision on the actual condition of the engine.

Hi guys, Sorry for the delay. Been trying to get more info on this motor.

    The serial number is: 2B111040
    It's a 2015 250 Pro XS with 78 hours on it.

He just had it winterized and sent me the service record. He did plugs, water pump / impeller, fuel filter as well as the basic winterization.

    Compression test came out as:
    Cyl 1: 112psi
    Cyl 2: 114psi
    Cyl 3: 120psi
    Cyl 4: 115psi
    Cyl 5: 110psi
    Cyl 6: 110psi

I was wondering if the compression looks good to you guys, and if you know if that year or serial number range was a good year, or a year to avoid.
Anything else I should look more into before purchasing?

    Thanks!

+1... Full Report, check gearcase, Maintenance History (and current needs) Review, and of course, a test run on the water to confirm proper operation.

Those compression numbers are within range.

BTW... that engine was built 5/27/2014.

Thanks guys, I'll definitely follow up with that stuff. Is there anything specific about that built date? Like EPA stuff, or known to lose cylinder 3 or anything like that?

No sir... just provided that info to help you understand it's not a '16, not a '15, but was built during the earlier half of 2014.

I have a 16 250 pro xs. Runs fine and hope she continues to. But I will tell you my 2 cents. It’s a very complicated engine that gets great fuel range. But could be very expensive to repair if something should happen. I take care of my own stuff with help from the experts on here and thank god these fine men donate their time to help us. Injectors, compressor are ridiculously expensive. I pray mine last 1000 hrs. Love it but if something should happen it might not be worth fixing. That bothers me Add that most shops don’t want to mess with them anymore and even fewer know what they are doing. If I can’t figure it out I am going to see joe in tx

Yes thanks, my buddy clarified the year when he shared the S/N and told me the correct year. Guess he wasn't too sure what the year was when he first mentioned it to me.

Basically the story is, my buddy recently repowered with a new 225 Yamaha (max rating on his boat) when his old motor bought the farm. His friend's boat is coming up for sale that has this Merc 250 on it we've been talking about. He's been wanting that boat for years, so wants to put his new 225 yamaha on it since it's under warranty (plus he's a yamaha guy). He wants to sell me the 250 merc, and put my 225 merc on his old boat.

Currently my 225 has over 700 hours on it, and my hull is rated for 250. So basically, I have the opportunity to upgrade to a 250 with way lower hours for a steal of a deal. So you all have been a great help, thanks!
