drop shot??

From one Steeler fan to another....

Rod: Lamiglas 703S Excel
Reel: Shimano Sienna
Line: PowerPro 20lb braid w/10lb copoly leader
Weights: I use anything from 3/16 to 3/8 depending on depth.
Plastic: I prefer something that floats or has at least some buoyancy so the worm hangs straight off the line. Mostly I stick with 4"-6" sizes.
Hooks: Gammy DropShot hooks sizes 1 or 1/0 depending on worm size.
Depths: You can fish these anywhere from shallow to deep, but I normally fish depths of 6' on down.

Ryan, I don't consider myself a dropshot king but I sure can hold my own. When I fish St. Clair sometimes I just watch the graph for fish and then just drop it down and watch them grab it. Here's my set up:

Rod: 7' MH fast tip
Line: 8-10 lb fluorocarbon
Hook: Gamakatsu #2 or Owner #6 Drop Shot
Weight: 1/8-1/4 oz Finesse
Bait: Rick Clunn's Luck "E" Strike U.S.A. "Salty Razor Worm" (Natural Shell)

I use Stren 3/14 Sonic Braid with a 6lb. Trilene Fluoro leader connected with a very small swivel. Twist can be a huge issue when drop shotting and the swivel helps alot. Another thing that has taken my hooked-land ratio to almost 100% is using a Gamakatsu EWG (something like a size 1) and "texas rigging" the plastic as opposed to a small nose hook....or a robo re-bard type str8 shank hook. I also use a fairly light rod because of the no stretch braid. I love to use the Kinami/Yamamoto Kut-Tail style worm. Purple/brown for a crawdad imitation or natural shad for a baitfish imitation. Of course, Roboworm is excellent too.

So im assuming since light line, you are using spin tackle...7'M good for that? How long of a leader? does it matter?

One question I have is, why do you use braid line and then attach a mono or fluorocarbon leader line to the braid? Why not just use fluorocarbon from the start?

Better feel, less line twist, handles better, casts farther (if you cast it but it's a dshot so you may not do that as much), cheaper to spool up with, braid lasts forever it seems like, and zero stretch so you can let your drag do it's thing or just backreel.

If I use a braid to floro setup, I have had better luck with a swivel than a double uni knot as I've broken a few too many of those with the braid cutting the floro but it's a good system especially if you put a drop of super glue on the knot and smooth it out some with your finger.

The swivel just works better for me and I can tie it up in no time with a san diego jam knot which I use now 100% of the time on floro.

90 % of the reason I use the braid is to fight the line twist issue--that is also the reason for the swivel. Several years ago I spent a full week at Bull Shoals drop-shotting and was litterally having to re-spool my fluorocarbon every night. What happens is the line gets so twisty that when you go to drop the bait, the line will twist around your rod tip and you can't drop/cast it. It is also nice that the braid lasts forever and if you break off, you are guaranteed that it will be below the swivel. Yes, the braid does twist some, but it is so limp and has no memory that it isn't really noticeable.

dropshot is one of my go to techniques(well i dont know how much ill be using it down here in fl now), but up home i threw it religiously. my setup was
St Croix Premier 6ft6in M
Shimano Sahara 2500
8lb Trilene XL
Gammy DS hook size 1
Powerteam Lures Finicky Tickeler Green Pumpkin, Green Pumpkin Light Blue Swirl
1/4 oz DS weight

I look for rockpiles, grass edges, humps, channels. I cast it out make sure it hits bottom. Less rod work the better IMO. slowly shake it and drag it back. if i spot suspended fish Ill fish it vertically. leader length varies. ill start with it near 12" and adjust as needed

could you hook a fluke the way you would normally fish one? where you run the hook out the back or reverse it to run between the flaps? Just something I might fiddle with
