    Catawba Island trip

Any advice for a trip up to Catawba Island this weekend? I haven’t been in about 15 years, mainly going for largemouth and smallmouth.

Big tournament [largemouth only] going out of West Harbor on Sunday, and a lot of those guys will be practicing on Saturday, so if conditions allow I’d advise either heading west from Catawba and poking your head into every small cut or marina that you see for largemouths, or poking around the islands for smallmouths. Smallmouth action tends to be very hit or miss this late in the summer. You could go miles without a bite and then find a small group together. If I were you I’d just stay fairly close to shore drop offs, as the free-roaming smallmouths will be much farther out and much harder to locate than individuals close to shore. There are places in the islands where largemouths also can be found, particularly around weed beds. But if largemouths are the target, every inlet close to current from Catawba to Port Clinton [and beyond] is a quick and easy place to find a few green fish.

Caught plenty of Largemouth in the Marinas but wasn’t really able to get out on the lake. It was a fun trip
