    Swimbait hooks

OK - so I did a search and nothing very recent on this topic so I have to post...

What is your recommended swim bait hook?
I am using 4-6" basstrix/reaction strike type baits and wondering about a weighted hook vs a jighead for these (both with a large hook).

Also I really live the live magic shad by LFT any recommendations?

    THANK YOU!

    Re: Swimbait hooks (Bigguyone)

Depending on the size of the bait anywhere from a 4/0 - 6/0 weighted EWG style hook...Falcon and Gamakatsu are a couple brands. As for weight it depends how deep you are looking to fish.

I also fish the smaller 4" size on a jighead...either a 1/4 oz ball or darter head seems to do the trick for me.

    Re: Swimbait hooks (Bigguyone)

For any of the hollow-bodied style swimbaits (Basstrix, Shadalicious, etc.), unless you absolutely need a 100% weedless presentation, I'd highly recommend the BladeRunner Tackle inserts:

If you can't find them locally, you can find them at most any of the major online tackle dealers. Great design and easy to use.

I like the look of those.

Do they tear up the top of the bait much at all?

    Re: Swimbait hooks (Bigguyone)

what are your thoughts on using a EWG vs a roundbend hook on a jighead for a hollowbelly swimbait?
What about for a solid swimbait like a lakefork Live magic shad?

obviously if I just go light weight for weedless I will do a weighted shank EWG hook with baitkeeper of someform on it.

I am just trying to decide/learn when to use a "texas rigged" hook vs a jighead if not in dense cover.

I know a show or two I have watched say that a weighted shank hook is best due to the "wobbling" action it gives the bait....and use a constant retrieve....

    WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?

I really like the Blade Runner style inserts. I cut a slit with a razor blade and then seal it up with Mend-It. Works great for bass and stripers.

I like the hooks Lake Fork Tackle has, with the screw-lock on it. the bend is great to not let the bait "ball up" on the hook. 3-4" baits 3/0 , 5" 5/0 , 8" 7/0

    Re: Swimbait hooks (menoceros)

I just bought a bunch of 6.5" shadalicious baits and tried by 7/0 Gama EWG hook in them and barely enough clearance with no weight on hook. Also seems so short on reference to length of bait....trailer/stinger is only real option to fix that.

Do the LFT have a wider gap? Any great prices on the LFT or Beasts??????

    Re: Swimbait hooks (Bigguyone)

The LFTs have a huge bite. They are somewhat shorter than the same size Gama. If you have seen a Live Magic shad you would see it really needs a big bite to get through it but the area the hook goes through is kind of short. I like them like that because they go through the bait a little further forward in the meat of the bait. When you get a larger hook from other vendors they can end up down by the tail.

    Re: Swimbait hooks (Centipede)

    I will try a few LFT 10/0 and 8/0

Issue on these shalicious 6.5" is they are long baits and a 7/0 gama seems like it is only 1/3 way down the bait at most. Looks like fish would have to inhale the whole bait (BIG FISH) to get to the hook....

Not even. I'm sure a 2lb fish would not have an issue. That bait should be fine as it is hollow. I fish a 6" solid boot tail bait that it is a trick to get a hook through. You will be amazed how small of a bass will get that Shadilious.

    Re: Swimbait hooks (Bigguyone)

Next time looking for swim baits look at the Berkley hollow-belly, they come with 3 baits and the hook is made for that bait or visa versa.... The newer ones have the harder plastic then the first batch, these are way more improved. After catching 2 Mudskippers (Bowfin) I tore one apart and it appears they took a 4" and dipped it in the good stuff, making another layer altogether
