I agree with your observation, it is consistent with my DIY Target Lock which uses the Minn Kota Auto Pilot for transducer directional control. The Auto Pilot contains an electronic compass that does a good job of maintaining transducer direction when the boat moves around due to spot lock corrections or light wind but I doubt it could correct for large or quick boat movements. Even this capability is pretty impressive and helpful but is not the same as locking down on a waypoint.
it is Also helpful that if it loses the target, just bump it back with the foot switch and it will resume the lock.
I have not used the HB Target Lock but I would expect it to respond quicker and have a broader range than my DIY if for no other reason than it is a programmable digital device as opposed to an analog compass. I have squeezed about all I can from an analog device.
